The Rwanda Government has called for sustained efforts against hate speech which is capable of causing disunity.
The Rwandan government on the occasion of the 29th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide also called for the extradition of some of the perpetrators of the heinous crime to answer for the crime against humanity.
No fewer than one million lives were lost in what has been declared as one of the worst crime against humanity.
This year’s Commemorative activities will be marked in Abuja from 7-13 April 2023, a statement issued by the embassy stated.
The commemoration is observed under the multiyear theme, “Remember – Unite – Renew”.
Stressing the need to sustain the fight against hate speech, Rwandan government said it will never be insensitive to the damage of hate speech and will thwrefore not spare no effort to maintain “the never again” resolve.
The statement reads in part, “29 years after, in parts of the world, there have been attempts in resurrecting the hate speech and advocating denial and revisionism.
“Rwanda will never be insensitive to that and will spare no effort to maintain “the never again” resolve.
“This aligns very well with the commitment of nations of the world by the UN Resolution A/RES/74/273 of 21st April 2020 (on the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda) and calls for sustained attention from all of us in all our areas of responsibility and activity.”
Rwandan government also used the opportunity of this year’s commemorat to appeal to international community to extradit those behind the heinous crime who are still at large.
“#Kwibuka29 affords an opportunity for reiterating a vivid appeal to the International Community concerning suspected genocide perpetrators still at large in different countries around the World, which have shown little or no preoccupation in bringing them to justice or extraditing them to Rwanda to be tried.
Sincere appreciation is extended to those Governments that have made a commendable effort to that end,” the statement further read.
In Abuja, the High Commission is to commemorate, in collaboration with the United Nations in Nigeria, at the UN House.
The Rwandan Community in Abuja, Friends, Representatives of
the Federal Government, Members of the Diplomatic Corps and
International Organizations, Civil Society, and Media are expected to gather to honour the lives lost and recommit to never again.
