The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has joined the global community in commemorating International Workers’ Day 2026, celebrating the resilience of Nigerian workers while urging renewed commitment to peace, stability, and economic reforms as critical drivers of national development.

In a statement signed by the Chamber’s Media and Strategy Officer, Olayemi John-Mensah. On Friday in Abuja, the Chamber aligned with this year’s theme, “Striving for Peace and Stability to Drive Industrialisation, Trade, and Decent Work for Social Justice,” stressing that sustainable economic growth and shared prosperity can only be achieved in a secure and stable environment.

ACCI described Nigerian workers as the backbone of the economy, noting that their contributions continue to sustain businesses and drive productivity despite prevailing macroeconomic challenges.

The Chamber emphasized that enduring peace and institutional stability remain indispensable to economic recovery, industrial expansion, and job creation.

President of the Chamber, Emeka Obegolu, in his goodwill message, commended workers across sectors for their dedication and resilience, describing them as vital agents of national progress.

“Today, we celebrate the hardworking men and women whose efforts sustain our economy and strengthen our nation. Their resilience and determination continue to inspire hope and drive growth across all sectors,” he said.

Obegolu highlighted the diversity of Nigeria’s workforce, spanning both formal and informal sectors, including artisans, entrepreneurs, and small-scale business operators.

He noted that these groups play a crucial role in advancing industrialisation, expanding trade, and fostering inclusive economic development.

He further stressed that achieving the objectives of the Workers’ Day theme requires deliberate policy actions, including strengthening labour relations, implementing inclusive socio-economic frameworks, and ensuring access to fair wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities for career growth.

According to him, productivity is closely tied to the welfare and dignity of workers. “As a Chamber representing the business community, we believe that productivity thrives in an environment where workers are treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.

We therefore advocate for policies that promote decent work and bridge the gap between policy formulation and implementation, particularly within the informal sector,” he added.

The ACCI president also called on government at all levels to prioritise pro-worker and pro-growth reforms, including a review of minimum wage structures and the creation of a stable, secure business environment that supports both employers and employees.

He paid tribute to members of the Chamber and ACCI staff for their professionalism and commitment, acknowledging their role in strengthening the institution and advancing Nigeria’s economic agenda.

Reaffirming its position as a leading voice of the business community in the Federal Capital Territory, ACCI pledged continued support for strategic partnerships and policies aimed at enhancing economic resilience, boosting industrial growth, and improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.
