Nigeria has taken a significant step toward redefining its diaspora engagement strategy, as policymakers, researchers, and development stakeholders gathered in Abuja for a high-level validation workshop on a landmark study examining the contributions of Nigerian professionals abroad.

The workshop, held at BON Hotel, Octagon in Jahi, was jointly convened by the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), focused on validating findings from a six-continent survey aimed at shaping evidence-based policies for harnessing diaspora contributions to national development.

The Director-General of NISER, Antonia Taiye Simbine, described the study as a critical intervention aligned with the institute’s mandate to provide rigorous, data-driven policy recommendations.

She emphasized that Nigeria’s diaspora community remains a strategic asset, contributing not only through remittances estimated at over $20 billion annually but also through knowledge transfer, innovation, and global networks.

Simbine noted that despite the diaspora’s vast potential, structural challenges persist. These include policy inconsistencies, weak institutional coordination, trust deficits, and regulatory bottlenecks that limit effective engagement.

She said the validation workshop was designed to refine the study’s findings and ensure that its recommendations are practical, inclusive, and responsive to stakeholder realities.

“The objective is to strengthen policy frameworks that can systematically integrate diaspora expertise into Nigeria’s development agenda,” she stated, urging participants to contribute actively to shaping actionable strategies.

The Chairman of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, underscored the growing importance of the Nigerian diaspora as a dynamic force across multiple sectors globally, including healthcare, science and technology, public service, and emerging industries.

Dabiri-Erewa highlighted a strategic shift in focus from remittances as mere consumption support to a more impactful model centered on investment-driven contributions.

“We are looking at remittances beyond consumption to remittances for investment,” she said, calling for policies that create an enabling environment for diaspora capital inflows and participation in national development projects.

She further outlined key thematic priorities for effective diaspora engagement, including structured engagement mechanisms, policy coherence, investment-friendly ecosystems, technology transfer, and the development of comprehensive, data-driven frameworks.

The NiDCOM boss also framed the workshop as part of broader efforts to address Nigeria’s long-standing brain drain challenge by promoting “brain gain” and “brain circulation,” where diaspora professionals contribute skills and expertise without necessarily relocating permanently.

Participants at the workshop including members of the National Assembly, government officials, policy experts, and representatives of civil society were tasked with interrogating the study’s methodology, validating its findings, and fine-tuning policy recommendations.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the outcome of the validation process would provide a robust foundation for reforms capable of transforming Nigeria’s diaspora engagement architecture.

Central to these expectations is the development of a coordinated framework that aligns diaspora contributions with national priorities in areas such as economic diversification, human capital development, and global competitiveness.

The validation workshop marks a pivotal phase in translating empirical research into actionable policy, with both NISER and NiDCOM reaffirming their commitment to sustained collaboration in leveraging Nigeria’s global diaspora for inclusive and sustainable development.
