Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he no enemies to fight. Jonathan said he never took offence against those who worked against him in 2015 presidential poll. The ex-President made this statement in his Facebook handle on Monday as he forgave Aminu Shagari who asked for his forgiveness having worked against him during 2015 presidential election. \"I have no enemies to fight, because of my confidence that people can only do to me what God permits,\" ex-President Goodluck Jonathan said. The Executive and legislative branches of government are to check and balance each other to avoid misconception of roles, the Speaker, House of Representatives has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gbajabiamila who spoke on Monday at a 2-day dialogue session for senior members of the Executive and Legislative branches of government noted that as long as the nation\u2019s system of government rests upon a partnership between the Executive and the Legislature, the most important of their functions is the obligation to check and balance each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his address titled, \u2018Building effective partnership for good governance and delivery of government\u2019s priority agenda,' Gbajabiamila said that for the delivery of good governance, legislative oversight must not be seen as an attempt to usurp the authority of the Executive, instead, it should be seen as good efforts to ensure that the government lives up to its obligations under the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While emphasizing on the misconception of the legislative function in a democracy as one of the biggest threats to effective cooperation between the Executive and the Legislature, he said, \u201cOne of the greatest of such misconceptions is that the Legislature exists only to make laws. The media and indeed large sections of the public assess the performance of individual legislators against this index of the number of bills sponsored and passed into law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"Our role is to ensure strict compliance with the appropriation laws as they exist, to amend those laws where doing so is necessary to ensure full compliance and achievement of the purpose of the appropriation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe oversight responsibility of the Legislature flows directly from our constitutionally mandated role as the keeper of the public purse responsible for ensuring that disbursement of funds from the purse is conducted in accordance with laid down rules, and for public benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is my experience in the House of Representatives that most of the conflicts between the Executive and Legislature arise from the exercise of the legislative oversight function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gbajabiamila also identified the demand for information as another major source of conflict between the Legislature and the Executive, saying, \u201cRequests for information, for records and for officials to appear before the legislature to provide clarity on matters of importance are legitimate legislative tools, authorised by the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe present upheavals at home and across the world make it clear that the old practices are insufficient to deliver our best and highest aspirations. We have an opportunity to remake our system of government so that we are better able to provide roads and electricity, security and social protection, a safe environment and a functional justice system that allows our people to live lives of peace and productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Executive and legislative branches of government are to check and balance each other to avoid misconception of roles, the Speaker, House of Representatives has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gbajabiamila who spoke on Monday at a 2-day dialogue session for senior members of the Executive and Legislative branches of government noted that as long as the nation\u2019s system of government rests upon a partnership between the Executive and the Legislature, the most important of their functions is the obligation to check and balance each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his address titled, \u2018Building effective partnership for good governance and delivery of government\u2019s priority agenda,' Gbajabiamila said that for the delivery of good governance, legislative oversight must not be seen as an attempt to usurp the authority of the Executive, instead, it should be seen as good efforts to ensure that the government lives up to its obligations under the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While emphasizing on the misconception of the legislative function in a democracy as one of the biggest threats to effective cooperation between the Executive and the Legislature, he said, \u201cOne of the greatest of such misconceptions is that the Legislature exists only to make laws. The media and indeed large sections of the public assess the performance of individual legislators against this index of the number of bills sponsored and passed into law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"Our role is to ensure strict compliance with the appropriation laws as they exist, to amend those laws where doing so is necessary to ensure full compliance and achievement of the purpose of the appropriation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe oversight responsibility of the Legislature flows directly from our constitutionally mandated role as the keeper of the public purse responsible for ensuring that disbursement of funds from the purse is conducted in accordance with laid down rules, and for public benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is my experience in the House of Representatives that most of the conflicts between the Executive and Legislature arise from the exercise of the legislative oversight function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gbajabiamila also identified the demand for information as another major source of conflict between the Legislature and the Executive, saying, \u201cRequests for information, for records and for officials to appear before the legislature to provide clarity on matters of importance are legitimate legislative tools, authorised by the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe present upheavals at home and across the world make it clear that the old practices are insufficient to deliver our best and highest aspirations. We have an opportunity to remake our system of government so that we are better able to provide roads and electricity, security and social protection, a safe environment and a functional justice system that allows our people to live lives of peace and productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chairman\/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has said that the full implementation of the Nigeria - South Africa Bi-National Commission agreement will help address the wrong perceptions that have led to series of frictions between both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Besides, Dabiri-Erewa said if the content of the Nigeria - South Africa Bi-National Commission is implemented to the letter, Early Warning Systems, Security and Intelligence Gathering as well as People to People Contacts will be achieved. The NIDCOM Boss stated this at a high level meeting with the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria Amb. Thami Mseleku in Abuja. The NIDCOM Chairman\/CEO believes that between Government to Government, there are no perceptions and mindsets but the challenges are People to People Relations, which NIDCOM is ready to work with the South African High Commission to address. Meanwhile, the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria Amb. Thami Mseleku explained that only a few bad eggs in both sides of the divide that are sending out negative narratives which the government is working hard to curtail. The former Edo Secretary to the State Government (SSG) also said \u201cthere were also several cases of malfunctioning card readers, which disenfranchised duly registered voters in addition to many cases of unregistered voters voting with pre-purchased voters\u2019 cards not collected by their actual owners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These malpractices, according to him, could easily form the basis to challenge the election results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chairman\/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has said that the full implementation of the Nigeria - South Africa Bi-National Commission agreement will help address the wrong perceptions that have led to series of frictions between both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Besides, Dabiri-Erewa said if the content of the Nigeria - South Africa Bi-National Commission is implemented to the letter, Early Warning Systems, Security and Intelligence Gathering as well as People to People Contacts will be achieved. The NIDCOM Boss stated this at a high level meeting with the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria Amb. Thami Mseleku in Abuja. The NIDCOM Chairman\/CEO believes that between Government to Government, there are no perceptions and mindsets but the challenges are People to People Relations, which NIDCOM is ready to work with the South African High Commission to address. Meanwhile, the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria Amb. Thami Mseleku explained that only a few bad eggs in both sides of the divide that are sending out negative narratives which the government is working hard to curtail. All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship candidate in the Edo September 19 poll, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, on Monday said he won\u2019t contest his defeat in court despite faulting the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though he said the election was neither free nor fair contrary to reports, alleging that there \u201cwere several episodes of violence, voter intimidation and falsification of results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ize-Iyamu, in a statement he personally signed said the decision not to contest the outcome was borne out of the desire not to further heat tension in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He specifically pointed out \u201cthere were unlawful cancellations of results particularly from Urhonigbe South and North in Orhiomwon while results were falsified from many polling units in Ofunama in Ovia South West, and in parts of Ovia North East, Owan West, Oredo, Egor, Ikpoba-Okha, Esan North East, Esan West, Esan South East, and Uhunmwode Local Government Areas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further accused security agents of collusion, saying they refused to intervene when \u201cgun-wielding thugs took over collation centres in many locations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The former Edo Secretary to the State Government (SSG) also said \u201cthere were also several cases of malfunctioning card readers, which disenfranchised duly registered voters in addition to many cases of unregistered voters voting with pre-purchased voters\u2019 cards not collected by their actual owners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These malpractices, according to him, could easily form the basis to challenge the election results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He however said: \u201cWe have decided not to commence an election petition. This is to avoid further tension in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are also mindful that the leadership of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and many well-placed individuals have made pronouncements endorsing the process, which we have chosen to respect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He however said he would continue to pursue two pre-election cases challenging Governor Godwin Obaseki\u2019s eligibility to contest the poll just \u201cas the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its flagbearers have continued to pursue several pre-election suits in various courts against us, all totalling 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Executive and legislative branches of government are to check and balance each other to avoid misconception of roles, the Speaker, House of Representatives has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gbajabiamila who spoke on Monday at a 2-day dialogue session for senior members of the Executive and Legislative branches of government noted that as long as the nation\u2019s system of government rests upon a partnership between the Executive and the Legislature, the most important of their functions is the obligation to check and balance each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his address titled, \u2018Building effective partnership for good governance and delivery of government\u2019s priority agenda,' Gbajabiamila said that for the delivery of good governance, legislative oversight must not be seen as an attempt to usurp the authority of the Executive, instead, it should be seen as good efforts to ensure that the government lives up to its obligations under the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While emphasizing on the misconception of the legislative function in a democracy as one of the biggest threats to effective cooperation between the Executive and the Legislature, he said, \u201cOne of the greatest of such misconceptions is that the Legislature exists only to make laws. The media and indeed large sections of the public assess the performance of individual legislators against this index of the number of bills sponsored and passed into law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"Our role is to ensure strict compliance with the appropriation laws as they exist, to amend those laws where doing so is necessary to ensure full compliance and achievement of the purpose of the appropriation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
