NNPC Denies Gas Transportation Bottlenecks Behind National Power Generation Deficit

Retirees seek forensic audit of NNPC cooperative society

Releated Post

National oil firm NNPC Limited has clarified that the gas transportation network operated by its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), remains fully operational and capable of supplying power stations across the country without constraints.
The state oil company’s clarification comes in response to a November 5, 2026, statement by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), which attributed recent declines in national electricity generation to limited gas availability and reduced water inflows to hydroelectric stations.
Transportation Network Intact, Production Up 10 Percent
In an official statement, NNPC Limited revealed that NGIC’s operational logs show no network or transportation-related bottlenecks capable of explaining the current drop in grid power.
The company highlighted that federal initiatives aimed at expanding domestic gas utilization have boosted Nigeria’s total gas production volumes by approximately 10 percent year-to-date in 2026.
However, NNPC noted that overall infrastructure readiness must be distinguished from individual plant transactions.
”Gas supply availability is therefore not a challenge,” the statement read. “Gas production, commercial supply arrangements, and actual deliveries to individual power plants must be assessed separately from the availability of transportation infrastructure.”
Call for Inter-Agency Review Across the Power Value Chain
To pinpoint the exact causes of the power generation deficit, NNPC Limited urged stakeholders to look beyond transportation infrastructure and analyze plant-level operational dynamics.
According to the company, a complete assessment must evaluate:
The operational readiness and availability of individual generating units.
Routine and emergency plant maintenance schedules.
Actual commercial gas offtake levels by thermal power plants.
NNPC Limited called for a joint, coordinated review of operational data involving gas producers, pipeline transporters, power generation companies (GenCos), and NISO to address bottlenecks and ensure transparent reporting across the gas-to-power value chain.
