The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has described the year 2026 as a “season of renewal” for the Commission, urging its workforce to deepen their confidence and faith in the Nigerian democratic project as the country prepares for a demanding electoral calendar.
INEC Chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to staff welfare, describing it as a critical foundation for the success, credibility, and integrity of the electoral process.
Prof. Amupitan reflected on the milestones recorded in the closing months of 2025, expressing heartfelt appreciation for the support and cooperation he has received since assuming office on October 23, 2025.
He singled out the successful conduct of the Anambra State Governorship Election as a defining moment that demonstrated the Commission’s resilience, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to the sanctity of the ballot.
According to him, the discipline, unity, and dedication displayed by INEC personnel during that election reaffirmed the institution’s capacity to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy, even under challenging circumstances.
“The collective resolve shown by our staff proves that INEC remains well-equipped to protect the will of the Nigerian people,” the Chairman noted, adding that the experience strengthened his confidence in the Commission’s preparedness for future assignments.
Prof. Amupitan charged INEC personnel to brace for the immediate electoral responsibilities of 2026, beginning with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections scheduled for February, followed by the off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States.
He stressed that beyond these imminent polls, preparations for the next General Elections must remain a top priority.
He expressed strong optimism that through teamwork, discipline, and professionalism, INEC would continue to deliver free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections that meet the expectations of Nigerians and uphold international best practices.
Reiterating the pledge he made at the outset of his tenure, Prof. Amupitan emphasized his resolve to foster a work environment anchored on equity, fairness, and mutual respect, where discipline is balanced with a culture that ensures every staff member feels valued, protected, and motivated.
He encouraged staff to embrace the opportunities ahead with renewed energy and to serve with excellence in order to build an INEC that is “trusted by all and sundry.”
