Nigeria has reaffirmed its strong bilateral ties and support for Sudan’s quest for peace, unity, and socio-economic recovery.

This was contained in a congratulatory message to the Republic of Sudan as the North African nation marks the 70th anniversary of its independence.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, conveyed Nigeria’s goodwill to His Excellency Mohieldin Salem Ahmed Ibrahim, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Sudan, as well as to the Government and people of Sudan on the historic milestone.

Describing the anniversary as a moment for reflection and renewal, the Nigerian government noted that Sudan’s Independence Day represents both a celebration of national sovereignty and a reaffirmation of the values of freedom, dignity, and shared responsibility that continue to shape the country’s national identity.

The statement acknowledged Sudan’s rich cultural heritage and enduring contributions to Africa’s political, intellectual, and cultural development, while commending the resilience of the Sudanese people in the face of complex political, economic, and humanitarian challenges.

Nigeria further highlighted the long-standing relationship between both countries, rooted in mutual respect, Pan-African solidarity, and shared anti-colonial experiences.

According to the Ministry, this common historical outlook has sustained bilateral cooperation and constructive engagement within regional and international platforms, including the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).

The Federal Government commended Sudan’s continued engagement with regional and global partners in pursuit of peace, stability, and national cohesion, while reaffirming Nigeria’s support for inclusive governance, sustainable peace, and socio-economic recovery that reflect the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

“As Sudan marks seven decades of independence, Nigeria hopes this anniversary will serve as a catalyst for ending the war, fostering renewed national consensus, reconciliation, and institutional strengthening,” the statement read.

Nigeria also reiterated its readiness to deepen cooperation with Sudan in areas of mutual interest, including diplomacy, education, agriculture, trade, capacity building, and people-to-people exchanges, in line with commitments to South-South cooperation and African-led solutions to continental challenges.
