A nursing mother, Firdausi Ahmad, has dragged her husband, Malam Anas, before a Shari’a Court sitting in Kaduna, seeking the dissolution of their three-year marriage and a monthly allowance of N10,000 for breastfeeding and child maintenance.
Appearing before the court on Thursday, counsel to the complainant, Malam Sani Sunusi, stated that the couple has been married for three years and shares an eight-month-old daughter.
Sunusi told the court that the defendant instructed his wife to leave their matrimonial home and return to her parents’ house until further notice.
“Since my client went to her parents, the defendant never checked on her or their eight-month-old baby,” Sunusi testified.
Prayers for Khul’i and Child Support
Presenting the complainant’s prayers, Sunusi told the court that his client seeks to dissolve the marriage through Khul’i—a form of divorce in Islamic law initiated by the wife—and is prepared to return the N100,000 dowry paid at marriage.
She is also urging the court to order the defendant to pay N10,000 monthly to cover the baby’s basic welfare and compensate for the eight months of breastfeeding required for her infant daughter.
Court Invites Absent Husband
The defendant was absent during Thursday’s sitting.
Presiding Judge Malam Yakubu Abdullahi instructed the court registrar to serve a formal letter of invitation to the defendant to ensure his appearance at the next session.
The matter was adjourned until November 11 to allow the complainant to present her witnesses and evidence.
