The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River has been hit by a major crisis as its State Chairman, Venatius Ikem, resigned with immediate effect.
In a bombshell resignation letter addressed to the PDP National Secretary at Wadata House, Abuja, Ikem said he could no longer lead a party grappling with “a crisis of direction and leadership coherence.”
He said the decision, though exceptionally difficult, followed deep introspection and careful reflection on current realities within the party.
“It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of responsibility that I hereby resign my position as the State Chairman,” Ikem stated.
The Obudu-born lawyer lamented that divergent positions and internal dynamics have weakened the party’s ability to pursue a clear and united course as the critical electoral season approaches.
He warned that if the challenges are left unaddressed, they risk undermining the sacrifices and aspirations of loyal members who have worked tirelessly for the party’s success.
Ikem, who served for five years, however, expressed gratitude to party leaders, singling out Prof. Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe for their support in his most challenging moments.
He also acknowledged FCT Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike, as National Leader whose contribution “remains indelible and worthy of recognition.”
He thanked supporters across the state, especially the people of Obudu, for their unwavering loyalty.
Ikem hinted at a new political direction, saying: “Life and leadership often require periods of reassessment and renewal.
“I believe I have reached a moment where a clearer vision and a new pathway are necessary,” he stated.
His resignation has thrown the opposition party into deeper uncertainty barely months to the 2027 general elections.
