The United Kingdom Government has advised applicants for British passports to expect a waiting period of up to three weeks under its standard processing service.
It also warned travellers not to make travel bookings until they have received their new passports.
According to guidance published on the official UK government website, most applicants using the standard passport service will receive their passports within three weeks.
The government explained that the processing period begins only after HM Passport Office receives an applicant’s supporting documents, rather than from the date the online application is submitted.
However, it noted that some applications may take longer to process if additional information is required or if an applicant is asked to attend an interview.
The post read, “You’ll usually get your passport within 3 weeks. It may take longer than 3 weeks if we need more information, or we need to interview you. We’ll tell you this within 3 weeks.”
In such cases, HM Passport Office said, “It would notify the applicant within the initial three-week period.”
The guidance applies to passport applications submitted from within the United Kingdom. Processing times for applications made from outside the UK may differ.
Applicants are encouraged to apply online, which the government described as the cheapest option.
Those who choose to submit paper applications through a Post Office will pay an additional £16 fee.
The post added, “You can also apply with a paper form from a post office. This costs an extra £16.00.”
For applicants who need their passports more urgently, the government said faster options remain available through the Online Premium Service and the one-week Fast Track service.
It also advised people facing emergencies, including serious illness or the death of a close relative or friend, as well as urgent government-related travel, to contact the Passport Adviceline for assistance.
Applicants who have already submitted their documents can track the progress of their applications through the official passport tracking service.
The government also cautioned applicants against booking trips before receiving their new passports, noting that replacement passports are issued with new passport numbers, which could affect existing travel bookings.
