The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound sympathy to the Government and people of China following the devastating landslide that struck Tanchang County in Gansu Province, describing the tragedy as a painful loss and reaffirming Nigeria’s solidarity with its longstanding strategic partner during the difficult period.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian government conveyed its condolences over the disaster, which occurred on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, and claimed at least 21 lives, while several others were affected as emergency rescue operations continued.
The ministry said Nigeria shares in the grief of the Chinese people and extended heartfelt sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives, as well as to those injured or displaced by the incident.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, the injured, and all those who have lost loved ones or property in this unfortunate incident,” the statement read.
The Federal Government also commended the prompt response of the Chinese authorities and emergency rescue personnel, acknowledging their efforts to save lives, provide humanitarian assistance and support affected communities in the aftermath of the disaster.
According to the ministry, the swift mobilisation of rescue teams reflects China’s commitment to mitigating the impact of the tragedy and assisting victims as recovery efforts continue.
Reaffirming the strength of bilateral ties between both nations, Nigeria noted that its relationship with China is anchored on decades of mutual respect, friendship and strategic cooperation across multiple sectors, including infrastructure, trade, investment, technology and development.
The government stressed that Nigeria remains firmly in solidarity with China as it confronts the humanitarian consequences of the landslide and begins the process of recovery and reconstruction in the affected communities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed confidence in the resilience of the Chinese government and people, saying it believes they will overcome the challenges posed by the disaster through coordinated recovery and rehabilitation efforts.
Nigeria also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of those who lost their lives, the speedy recovery of the injured and strength for bereaved families coping with the devastating loss.
