Nigeria and China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cultural diplomacy, sports cooperation and people-to-people exchanges as officials, diplomats, sports administrators, media executives and cultural enthusiasts gathered in Abuja for “The Passion of Chinese Wushu (Martial Arts): Cultural Heritage Chinese Wushu Premium Exhibition.”

Held at the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, the event showcased the rich traditions of Chinese martial arts while highlighting the growing relationship between the two nations, particularly as both countries celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr yang jianxing the cultural counselor of the Chinese Embassy described Wushu as one of the most important symbols of China’s traditional culture and a powerful tool for fostering mutual understanding among peoples and civilizations.

Representing the Chinese mission, Mr yang noted that cultural exchange remains an essential bridge for dialogue, learning and friendship among nations.

“Wushu is not merely a sport; it is a cultural language and a spiritual heritage,” the Chinese representative said. “It embodies the Chinese nation’s enduring spirit of self-improvement and reflects values such as respect, virtue, harmony and peaceful coexistence.”

Mr yang emphasized that the essence of martial arts is not conflict but peacebuilding and personal development.

According to the Mr yang the Chinese character “Wu” symbolizes the prevention of violence and the promotion of harmony, underscoring the philosophical foundations of martial arts traditions that have evolved over centuries.

Participants were told that the true spirit of Wushu extends beyond physical techniques and encompasses moral discipline, self-cultivation and respect for others.

From the graceful movements of Tai Chi to the dynamic techniques of traditional boxing styles, Chinese martial arts were presented as expressions of a broader philosophy emphasizing balance between humanity and nature and respect for diversity.

The event featured a delegation from Beijing Sport University led by Professor Wu Dong, who conducted demonstrations, lectures and interactive sessions aimed at introducing Nigerian audiences to the art and philosophy of Chinese martial traditions.

Mr yang said the exhibition was designed not only to showcase Chinese culture but also to strengthen friendships, particularly among young people from both countries.

He highlighted the significance of the event coming during a landmark year in China-Nigeria relations.

Over the past 55 years, bilateral ties between China and Nigeria have expanded across multiple sectors, including trade, infrastructure development, education, technology and culture.

Mr yang noted that the relationship’s success is rooted not only in economic cooperation but also in the friendship shared by the peoples of both countries.

They pledged that the Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Center would continue implementing initiatives aimed at expanding cooperation in Chinese language education, arts and culture, tourism promotion, youth exchanges and sports collaboration.

The objective, he said, is to encourage greater mutual understanding and contribute to building what China describes as an “all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future.”

Also speaking at the event, a representative of the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Mohammed Bulama, praised the Chinese Embassy for using culture as a platform for strengthening international friendship.

The FRCN representative described the exhibition as a reflection of China’s rich cultural heritage and its commitment to promoting intercultural dialogue.

He highlighted the corporation’s collaboration with the Chinese Embassy through the “Ni Hao” programme, which is broadcast nationwide and focuses on Chinese language, culture, tourism, education, sports and bilateral relations.

According to him, the programme airs twice weekly across FRCN’s extensive national network, which includes more than 42 FM stations and numerous regional broadcasting platforms reaching communities across Nigeria.

The partnership, he said, has enhanced public awareness of Chinese culture while enriching FRCN’s content and expanding cultural perspectives among Nigerian audiences.

“Over the years, this collaboration has provided an invaluable platform for showcasing China’s culture, tourism, innovation and development achievements to Nigerians while fostering greater understanding of the enduring friendship between our countries,” he said.

The broadcaster reaffirmed FRCN’s commitment to sustaining and deepening cooperation with the Chinese mission through media engagement and cultural programming.

A goodwill message delivered on behalf of the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, underscored the growing role of sports diplomacy in strengthening bilateral relations.

Represented by Musa Amodu, the Commission praised the exhibition as a celebration not only of sporting excellence but also of history, identity, philosophy and friendship.

The Commission noted that Wushu, like many traditional sports, embodies values such as discipline, courage, self-control and respect, making it a powerful vehicle for connecting cultures.

“Sports speaks a universal language,” Amodu said. “It crosses borders, bridges differences and brings people together in ways that formal diplomacy sometimes cannot.”

He emphasized that the future of Nigeria-China relations should be measured not only by trade volumes, infrastructure projects and official agreements but also by cooperation in sports, education, culture and youth engagement.

The National Sports Commission used the occasion to acknowledge China’s support for sports development through training and capacity-building programmes.

Musa disclosed that two technical officers from the Commission recently returned from a professional training programme in China organized by the Academy for International Business Officials under the Chinese government.

The Commission expressed appreciation for the initiative and called for expanded opportunities in areas including sports administration, coaching development, infrastructure management, sports science, anti-doping programmes and athlete development.

It also proposed broader collaboration involving sports technology, traditional sports promotion, sports medicine, research and industry development.

According to the Commission, Nigeria’s youthful population and China’s extensive experience in sports administration create opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships.

The agency pledged its readiness to deepen engagement with Chinese institutions, including the Chinese Embassy, the China Cultural Center and Beijing Sport University.

As martial arts demonstrations captivated audiences, speakers repeatedly emphasized the role of culture and sports as bridges connecting nations beyond formal diplomacy.

They noted that events such as the Wushu exhibition allow countries to engage at the level of people, values and shared aspirations, creating stronger foundations for long-term friendship.

Yang expressed confidence that the exhibition would not only increase appreciation for Chinese martial arts but also open new avenues for educational, cultural and sports cooperation between China and Nigeria.
