The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has joined 15 other organisations in signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Energy Commission of Nigeria aimed at promoting energy efficiency, sustainable development, and cleaner energy adoption across Nigeria.
The agreement, signed in Abuja on Thursday, marks a significant step toward strengthening collaboration between government institutions and the private sector in addressing the country’s energy challenges while supporting economic growth and environmental sustainability.
The MoU establishes a framework for implementing an Energy Efficiency Awareness and Implementation Campaign targeted at businesses, with a focus on improving energy management practices, boosting industrial productivity, and encouraging the adoption of energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies.
Representing ACCI at the signing ceremony was Dr. Chidiebere Onwumere, Executive Director of the National Policy Advocacy Centre (NPAC), while Barrister Abdulazeez Elamah signed on behalf of the Energy Commission of Nigeria.
The collaboration reflects a strategic partnership between the Energy Commission, Nigeria’s apex agency for national energy planning and policy coordination, and ACCI, which serves as a leading advocate for businesses within the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.
Under the agreement, participating organisations will work together to promote best practices in energy management through capacity-building initiatives, including training programmes, workshops, and awareness campaigns.
The partnership will also seek to facilitate access to financing for businesses interested in deploying energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy solutions.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, described the partnership as a critical milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to tackle energy challenges through collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing.
According to him, the agreements signed represent more than ceremonial commitments, stressing that they are designed to deliver measurable outcomes that will support Nigeria’s energy transition agenda and broader sustainable development objectives.
He noted that partnerships involving government institutions, private sector stakeholders, and development-focused organisations are essential to accelerating energy efficiency adoption and improving access to modern energy services across the country.
The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader national priorities, including reducing carbon emissions, expanding clean energy adoption, and increasing access to sustainable energy solutions, particularly in underserved communities.
As part of the implementation strategy, the signatories are expected to undertake joint activities such as energy audits, pilot projects, sector-specific interventions, and public awareness campaigns.
These efforts are intended to help businesses reduce operational costs, improve competitiveness, and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable economy.
For ACCI, the partnership reinforces its commitment to supporting policies and initiatives that strengthen the business environment while promoting sustainable industrial development.
The Chamber said it would continue to mobilise private sector participation, advocate for enabling policies, and foster strategic collaborations that translate the objectives of the MoU into tangible economic benefits.
