Releated Post

The United Nations has called on the government of Nigeria to investigate Reuters’ allegation against the Nigeria military.

The International news outfit had in a report on Wednesday 7 December, 2022 claimed that Nigeria soldiers have been carrying out abortions on pregnant women linked with the Boko Haram insurgents since 2013.

According to the report no fewer than 10,000 pregnancies among women and girls, many of whom had been kidnapped and raped by Islamist militants were terminated secretly by the soldiers.

However, the military top echelon has since denied the report. The military also claimed that the report was an attempt to paint the military and the country in a bad light.

The denial notwithstanding, the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres wants the allegation investigated.

U.N spokesman, Stephane Dujarric said the world body was interested in the matter.

The UN, Dujarric said, “The Secretary-General takes note with concern of the allegations of systemic and coerced abortions reportedly perpetrated by the Nigerian Army against women and girls who had already been victimized by Boko Haram.

“We call on the Nigerian authorities to fully investigate these allegations and make sure there’s accountability.”
