Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has again called on Nigerian youths protesting against police brutality across the country to end the ongoing protests and enter a roundtable dialogue with the government in addressing their various demands.

Bello made the call on Monday in his address to Nigerian youths which is the 5th in the series of his addresses to the youths since the commencement of their protests about 10 days ago.

He said the protesting youths have over the last 10 days demonstrated resilience and courage in making their demands known to the government, adding that it is time leaders of the protesters come out to engage with the government.

According to him, it would be difficult for the governments at all levels to know who to interface within resolving some of the issues if there are no leaders, adding that opportunists could hijack the gains of the protests.

“In like manner, the real leaders and spokespersons of these protests must also begin to ‘show face’ now to enable government at all levels know who to interface with.

“We cannot even appoint people into the various bodies being set up to address your demands without being afraid that opportunists who have no credibility with you are high-jacking it.

May I, therefore, request that the protesters give us people to engage with, especially on the timeliest schedules for calling it a day which accommodates all reasonable demands”, he said.

The governor warned that notwithstanding the discontent and grievances being expressed by Nigerians, they must resist the temptation of using the current situation to seek an undemocratic change in leadership.

“It goes without saying that despite different levels of dissatisfaction with the status quo in our country among the citizenry, it is unwise to think that a change of leadership other than by clear-cut democratic means will be tolerated by citizens.

“Those interested in Mr President’s seat must wait for 2023 and when it is finally up for grabs, they must present themselves to the Nigerian electorate, duly nominated as flagbearers for any party of their choice. It is as simple as that. Ditto for any other duly elected seat or office”, he said.

Bello said there have been calls on youths in Kogi State to engage in more protests, adding that while he’s not against peaceful protests in the state, he, however, advised youths against blocking major highways which could cause hardships to the citizens.

“As we go into a new week, I have seen several advertisements calling for more protests in Kogi State. As usual, I am all for peaceful protests, but I do caution that all gatherings must maintain empathy for others who may not wish to march with you at this time.

“In particular, given our unique position as the gateway to the North and South of the country, I must demand respect for the right of road users. People cannot be emerging from months of lockdown, be in the process of trying to rebuild their lives only to be thrown back into extended lockdowns again by barricades set up by protesters on public thoroughfares.

“We are making these cautionary statements at this time as a responsible government which is keyed into, and even quite ahead of, the national response to your demands.

“We will not relent in putting in early warning systems for detecting, and sustainable safeguards for checkmating, abuses against the human rights of citizens, especially the youths, by law enforcement agencies.

“At the same time, we are committed to making the work easier for our police by providing them with training in modern policing, professional therapy/counselling and supply of kits at no cost. The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has predicted a spike in the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak in the country in the next two weeks.
The prediction was due to the total disregard for the preventive measures against the virus by thousands of Nigerians protesting in the ongoing #EndSARS campaign.

Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and chairperson, Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, made this known on Monday in Abuja at the joint national briefing of the task force.

Mr Mustapha said the prediction was due to the total disregard for the preventive measures against the virus exhibited by thousands of Nigerians protesting in the ongoing #EndSARS campaign across various cities in the country.

Thousands of Nigerians have in the past 10 days, taken to strategic areas across Abuja, Lagos, Edo, Anambra, Rivers, and other states to protest against reported police brutality, harassment and extra-judicial killings.

Such brutality is said to be perpetrated by the operatives of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The SGF said: “Truth be told, two weeks from today, if you get all the people that congregated at the Lekki toll plaza and run a test, you would establish for sure several infections.

He partly said, “Don’t let your righteous cause be hijacked…and bring our nation to its needs…This is the time to move your agitation from the streets.”

Soldiers on Tuesday morning fired sporadically into the air to disperse some #EndSARS protesters who gathered to bbegin the day's protest in Sokale and FO1 areas of Kubwa.

While passers-by scampered to safety, residents who were still in their houses immediately shut their doors and windows even as motorists on the Bwari-Dutse Alhaji road became stranded due to the ensuing gridlock on the route.

The protesters had erected a barricade at the Sokale roundabout area and Winners road and had begun settling into the protest before the invasion by soldiers in three trucks.

Meanwhile, hoodlums have taken over some parts of the Apo Mechanic village, attacking motorists and attempting to loot some shops in the area.

The hoodlums who had earlier attacked #EndSARS protesters the previous day were said to have mobilised to the area on Tuesday morning to halt the peaceful protest against police brutality.

More states have announced 24hours curfew following the escalation of violence in the ongoing nationwide protest against police brutality and bad governance.
