“An injunction restraining the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants from acting in the installation of the 10th defendant to the throne of the Emir of Zazzau or presenting to the 10th defendant with the staff of office until the final determination of this suit;

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on the #EndSARS campaigners to work with the police to evolve a suitable and effective policing template to tackle armed robbery and other violent crimes in the country.
The Inspector General of Police in response to protests to end police brutality last week announced the dissolution of the Federal Special Anti-robbery Squad (F-SARS).
In a statement yesterday, the Director General of the Agency, Dr. Garba Abari also commended the Police authorities for yielding to the call of the mass for reform of the Police.
The statement which was signed by Mr. Paul Odenyi, Assistant Director, Press, reads: “Now that SARS has been dissolved, the next necessary step should be for campaigners to engage constructively with the police to birth a more responsible alternative to SARS, rather than being confrontational. While urging the police to bring to justice all of its officers involved in the reckless and unethical actions that has led to loss of lives and dignity by Nigerians, the campaigners should also not allow themselves to be used by political elements to pursue other interests.

“We must be careful not to denigrate our Police Force to the extent that it gets disempowered in the face of manifest security challenges, especially given the fact that we are witnessing increased cases of insecurity like armed robbery, kidnapping, insurgency and terrorism which require a specialized Force to confront them.

Gbajabiamila spoke during an audience with a delegation led by popular Nigerian singer, David Adeleke (Davido), who came on a courtesy visit to convey to the Parliament deep grief of the Nigerian people over police brutality.
He said the House identified the need to reform police and has commenced work.
Only last week, the Lower chamber had urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, to produce an immediate plan for the identification and compensation for victims of police brutality in the country.
The Speaker said the House has ensured that key reforms are institutionalised within the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

"The amended Police Reform Act contains most, if not all, of the grievances and demand Nigerians want to see, including a functioning police complaint unit that should be a liaison between the citizenry and the police, as Nigerians can no longer live in fear of those who are supposed to protect them," he said.

He said that the House has been at the forefront of addressing the inhuman treatment meted on Nigerians by some of the SARS operatives.
The Speaker therefore noted that all the demands relayed have been captured in a motion sponsored by the House Leader, Rep. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, many days before the protests even commenced.

Gbajabiamila said several resolutions were reached from the motion, some of which had been identified and implemented by the police authorities, such as the demand that the IGP take decisive action to stop the brutality and human rights violation by SARS and report the said actions to the House within three weeks.

The House demanded the setting up of an independent body to oversee the investigation and prosecution of officers found culpable of such violent misconduct and ensuring they are punished according to the law.

He also emphasized the position of the House on the need to have an independent system for monitoring police actions and holding police officers to proper account for failures to follow the law and the police code.

Besides, he restated the determination of the House to legislate on the lasting solutions to the problems of policing in Nigeria.

In support of these efforts, he said, the House will this week meet with the national leadership of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), the Nigerian Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and select civil society organisations to begin joint efforts at developing a legislative proposal.

He assured the delegation of the lawmakers’ total and unwavering allegiance to the sensitivity and needs of the Nigerian people.

Davido had earlier in his remarks expressed the anger of Nigerians towards what they termed government's insensitivity towards those being governed.

Nwankwo therefore urged the president to withdraw her nomination.
The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room also charged members of the upper chamber to thoroughly investigate the background of other nominated by the president.
Item F, paragraph 14 of the third schedule of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) forbids a partisan politician as a member of INEC - a body charged under the Constitution to unbiasedly conduct of free and fair elections. The statement reads in part: "Situation Room calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately withdraw her nomination.

“We must be careful not to denigrate our Police Force to the extent that it gets disempowered in the face of manifest security challenges, especially given the fact that we are witnessing increased cases of insecurity like armed robbery, kidnapping, insurgency and terrorism which require a specialized Force to confront them. We need a Police Force that is civil, obedient to the rule of law but can also bite in order to make impact on the war against vices."

;

The organisations under the umbrella of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room said it was concerned about the nomination of Ms. Onochie, a well known partisan supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari and his ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement rejecting her nomination, the Convener, Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, Clement Nwankwo said her nomination contravene the constitution which forbids a partisan politician as a member of the row trial body.
Her nomination amounts to a major attempt at undermining efforts to build credibility for an improved electoral process in the country.
The statement reads in part: "Situation Room calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately withdraw her nomination. Should the President fail to withdraw this nomination the Nigerian Senate is hereby called upon to disregard her nomination without any consideration whatsoever. Situation Room is also calling on the Nigerian Senate to investigate all of the other nominations by the President especially as there are concerns that some of these nominations may have been by self-serving interests.

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has assured Nigerians of key reforms in the country's Police that will address the shortcomings in the force.

While acknowledging the fact that there are honest and hardworking personnel within the SARS operatives, he said the bad ones have dented the image of the unit beyond the trust of Nigerians.

He recounted his role in the #EndSars protest the day before, stating that the people want trust, accountability and communication.

On his list of demands, Davido asked for the immediate release of all arrested protesters nationwide during the "endsarsnow" protest, justice for all deceased victims of police brutality over the years and appropriate compensation for their families.
