Workers in Kwara State public service has commenced an industrial action, as labour leaders denied receiving any court injunction.

The strike is to press home their demand for the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage by the government.

Though the state government on Monday said it had secured an injunction from the National Industrial Court restraining the workers from going on strike, civil servants in the state shunned their offices to comply with the directive of the organised labour in the state.

It was observed that the gates of some government offices, ministries, courtrooms and schools were locked and the areas deserted.

Chairman of the NLC in the state, Mr. Issa-Ore, while expressing satisfaction with the level of compliance by the workers, told the media that the labour leaders received no court injunction on the strike.

“We have not received any court injunction from anyone that we should not go on strike to fight for the implementation of the minimum wage which has become a law in the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, on Tuesday appealed to the workers to understand the financial situation in the state, saying the state’s treasury was too lean to accommodate the demands of the labour unions.

The governor was said to have said this when he visited the dilapidated Banni Community Secondary School in Ilorin.

AbdulRazaq, in a statement by Rafiu Ajakaye, his Chief Press Secretary, said, “If we accede to the request of the labour, we will not be able to do any other thing other than paying workers. “We want to pay the minimum wage. Where we disagree with the labour is consequential adjustment that they are asking for. It will mean we cannot do any other thing outside salary payment.

Nigerian youths in thousand are continuing their protest against brutality, extortion, harassment and extrajudicial killings by police personnel especially the Special Anti Robbery Squad (FSARS).

Governments in different states have appealed to the protesters to halt their demonstrations and called for negotiation with the youths.

While the protests have been adjudged successful, there have been reports of division among leading activists and agitators on whether the protest should end.

But Yesufu said such arguments could become injurious to the passion of protesters who want to see a better Nigeria.

“I think a lot of people who have not been part of this protest as they should are coming out to talk about this protest being monetised,” Yesufu said.

“Please don’t allow this. It is not like the last one that was called for EndSARS when people never turned up and they never take part in it and they are looking for everything to discredit the protest so that they can say that is the reason they didn’t join

“If anyone has collected money for protest, drag the person out and let other people do their thing. If yours (protest) is monetised, another person’s isn’t monetised.”

The Nigerian government on Tuesday announced that SARS will be replaced by a new unit – Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT). The creation of the unit, however, will not stop the agitation.

“Yes, we have seen the headlines from the government but what is the execution plan? What is the basis for a committee?” Yesufu questioned.

“Can the government bring an execution plan where you know this is A B C – so that when it is not done, you know (because you have) a timeframe?”

Our schools have collapsed; the basic health facilities need to be fixed, and we need to do much more for the rest of the population too.

“We want to pay the minimum wage. Where we disagree with the labour is consequential adjustment that they are asking for. It will mean we cannot do any other thing outside salary payment.

“There is a court injunction and as far as the government is concerned there is no strike. Everybody should report to work. We will work on how to improve facilities in our state as much as we will pay salary of our workers,” he said.

…Poly can’t meet COVID-19 protocols for resumption –ASUP

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics have met in a bid to halt a planned nationwide strike by the lecturers.

ASUP had issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to implement the polytechnics NEEDS assessment, as well as correct the challenges of the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System.

The delegation of ASUP led by its President, Anderson Ezeibe, doubted the possibility of
polytechnics meeting COVID-19 protocols for resumption even as the Federal Government had directed that schools should reopen.

He said, “Beyond the sentiments of announcing that all institutions resume, the polytechnics lacked support to enforce resumption protocols.”

He also said polytechnic lecturers regretted rushing to enroll on the IPPIS, because the system had been characterised with omission of staff members’ names and non-remittance of check-off dues, among others.

He said, “Recall that we had issued a 15-day ultimatum in respect of some pertinent demands before the COVID-19 outbreak; being Nigerians, we had to encourage our members to endure. Be that as it may, with the gradual reopening of economic activities, it is pertinent we bring up these issues again.”

Responding, the minister said the demands would be looked into.

;
