The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will soon suspend its strike, says the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige.

Ngige gave the hint during an interview with the media in Abuja

He explained that the Ministries of Finance, Education, Labour and Employment and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation will be meeting with ASUU to resolve the disagreement on the controversial Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Ngige however said government was ready for an integrity test of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution developed as an alternative to IPPIS.

He said, “The issue of ASUU will soon come to an end. Two reasons – ASUU have called the Federal Government, represented by Finance and the Accountant-General Office and their direct employers, the Ministry of Education to come for the test.

“We are ready to do that. After the independence day celebration, the four ministries and agencies involved will gather together with ASUU. We will look at the UTAS. If there are shortcomings with IPPIS as complained which UTAS have corrected. What’s wrong about it? It is software, we will look at it.

“Secondly, ASUU members have been collecting their money since COVID-19 came and I wrote a memo to Mr president that ASUU members are still Nigerians. Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Director General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said that testing remains a core strategy of the country's response to Covid-19 pandemic.
Ihekweazu spoke on receiving the 115,800 test kits provided by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) towards containing the Covid-19 pandemic. The kits was funded by IHS.
He acknowledged the great importance of the received test kits, especiallu at this crucial period; saying testing remains the mainstay of the response led by the Presidential Task Force and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the first step towards diagnosing the infection.

He said, "Testing remains a core strategy of Nigeria’s response to COVID-19. This is critical for understanding the burden of the disease on our population and targeting our response activities accordingly. The primary goal of the Nigerian Government is to control the spread of this disease. This donation from IHS Nigeria through UNICEF will contribute to the national stockpile of test kits managed by NCDC, and support efforts of the growing network of accredited laboratories across the country for the testing of COVID-19."
He expressed the country's gratitude for the continued support from UNICEF, IHS Towers and other partners.
