Joint Action Committee of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union will begin a 14-day warning strike on Monday.

A statement jointly signed by the National President, SSANU, Samson Ugwoke, and General Secretary, NASU, Peter Adeyemi, said the strike was initiated on the inconsistencies of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System in the payment of salaries and the non-payment of Earned Allowances to members.

Some other issues mentioned in the statement were, “non-payment of national minimum wage and retirement benefits to our members. The delay in the renegotiation of FGN/NASU and SSANU Agreements, as well as the non-payment of benefits to retired members, teaching staff usurping the headship of non-teaching units and neglect and poor funding of state universities.”

“Please note that this warning strike is a prelude to a full blown total and indefinite industrial action if the grievances highlighted above are not properly addressed,” the statement added.

While addressing journalists after a joint congress on Friday, the branch chairmen of UNILAG chapters of SSANU and NASU, Olusola Sowunmi and Kehinde Ajibade, said they are no longer interested in IPPIS because of the promise government failed to carry out concerning peculiarities of the university system.

Sowunmi said, “We are disappointed with the turnout of things. The IPPIS failed to meet our expectations and our retired members are not being paid as and when due. Also, we are not being paid the new minimum wage that other agencies of government have been enjoying. The new wage is a matter of law as it was an act of parliament.”

In the same vein, Ajibade said, “Just as the government has given schools notice of resumption, our national leadership also gave us the notice to announce this warning strike over a month ago. After the two weeks, if nothing is done to address our concerns, we will meet and deliberate on the next line of action.”

The Police in Ekiti has recovered three vehicles abandoned by an armed robbery gang that invaded Wema Bank in Iyin-Ekiti on Friday.

The cars are Volkswagen Golf, marked GED 906 AA; Acura MDX Jeep marked LSR 327 CD; and Toyota Camry marked GED 106 ER.

According to the statement signed by Mr Sunday Abutu, its Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Tunde Mobayo said that the three vehicles were recovered with some Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), some raps of Indian hemp, alcoholic drinks and two cell phones.

The command said the robbers, numbering ten and heavily armed, stormed the Iyin-Ekiti branch of WEMA Bank at about 3:55pm. The gang members overpowered the policemen on guard at the bank due to their large number before gaining entrance into the banking hall.

The National Coordinator of Presidential Task Force on covid-19, Dr. Sani Aliyu has given reason why public laboratories are not allowed to conduct free testing for incoming passengers.
Aliyu said Federal government cannot afford such venture.
Besides, he said the public labs would run out of test kits should it attempt to offer free test services.

He spoke during a townhall webinar meeting organised by Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) at the weekend.

"It is not something that government can afford. We will run out of test kits", he said.

He also explained that the Federal Government does not receive any money paid to private laboratories as it would have loved to subsidize, but it is not sustainable by the government.

"The PTF and NCDC are urgently working with all states to create a mechanism for private testing. We’ve already approached 6 or 7 states that have private labs in their states.

"A list of accredited private laboratories, especially if one is traveling out of the country, is on the NCDC microsite covid19.ncdc.gov.ng/privatelabs," he clarified.
