The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has called for the immediate discontinuation of the Niger State Central Payment System (CPS) for university staff salaries.
In a resolution reached at its Congress on Tuesday, the unions described the CPS as problematic, citing issues such as inaccurate personnel records, inaccessibility of the payment platform, delays in third-party remittances, unexplained deductions, lack of transparency in salary breakdowns, and in some cases, non-payment of salaries.
Drawing parallels with the Federal Universities’ negative experiences with the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), the JAC stressed the need for IBB University to retain its financial autonomy to address its peculiar operational needs.
The unions noted that while they had earlier expressed concerns to the University Council Sub-committee on JAC Matters, they reluctantly agreed to a trial of the CPS at the Committee’s request. However, the current situation, they said, has validated their fears.
JAC has therefore urged the University Council, Niger State Government, and all relevant stakeholders to act urgently to reinstate the institution’s independent payment system for the smooth running of academic activities.
