Nigeria has taken a major step toward strengthening its diplomatic presence in North Africa with the commencement of construction of a new Chancery building for the Nigerian Embassy in Algiers, Algeria.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held at Dely Ibrahim, the diplomatic district of the Algerian capital, was led by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.

Tuggar described the project as a critical component of the Ministry’s ongoing reforms to modernize Nigeria’s foreign missions.

He emphasized that “the new Chancery is designed to reflect Nigeria’s identity and ambition through contemporary, eco-friendly architecture, enhanced security systems, and upgraded facilities that will improve consular service delivery and staff welfare.

“The new building is expected to be completed within 18 months.

“According to the Minister, the facility will not only provide a more functional space for diplomatic operations but will also serve as a symbol of Nigeria’s renewed commitment to professionalism and global engagement.

“The construction coincides with wider diplomatic efforts to strengthen Nigeria-Algeria relations.”

Tuggar also held bilateral talks with his Algerian counterpart, Ahmed Attaf, focusing on areas such as economic cooperation, regional security, and the reactivation of the Nigeria Algeria Binational Commission.

The Chancery project is one of several infrastructure upgrades planned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of its drive to project a stronger, more efficient Nigerian diplomatic presence worldwide. He added.
