A Federal High Court in Abuja has acceded to the request to have prosecution witnesses in the terrorism trial of self acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu to be shielded.
Kanu is standing trial for terrorism before the Federal High Court presided over by Justice James Omotosho.
Justice Omotosho granted the permission on Tuesday while ruling in an ex-parte application filed by the prosecuting lawyer, Adegboyega Solomon (SAN).
While arguing the application, Awomolo said the identities of the witnesses needed to be protected for security reasons.
He noted that the case against Kanu borders on terrorism and therefore, there was the need to protect the witnesses.
Awomolo also requested that the witnesses’ names be shielded from the public for the general reasons of security.
Defence lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN) did not object to the prosecution’s application.
Agabi however, requested for similar cooperation from the prosecution when the defendant’s bail application is being considered.
Meanwhile, the prosecution has opened its case by calling its first witness, identified as PWAAA, who is currently in the witness box.
