Scientists are examining a coronavirus variant first detected in South Africa to see if it could limit the efficacy of vaccines.

Experts say the South African variant has a number of mutations that could make it less susceptible to the immune response triggered by vaccination.

It is also thought to be more infectious, but it’s not clear if it causes more severe disease.

The scientists say standard measures to limit transmission – wearing masks, handwashing and social distancing – will work with the South African variant, and any others that may arise.
