The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Cross River Chapter, has called on elected representatives of the state in the National Assembly to close ranks and protect the strategic economic interests of the state, particularly on issues relating to its oil wells.
IPAC made the call in a recent press statement signed by its State Chairman, Engr. Effiom Edet Okon.
The council said it had observed with concern recent public discussions and commentaries surrounding the status of Cross River State’s oil wells and related matters of resource ownership and representation.
According to IPAC, as the umbrella body of registered political parties in the state, it is compelled to remind all Senators and members of the House of Representatives from Cross River that their primary responsibility is to defend and advance the collective interests of the people of the state above personal or partisan considerations.
“The issue of Cross River State’s oil wells remains a matter of significant economic importance to the state and its people.
“Consequently, every action, statement, negotiation or legislative engagement concerning this subject must be guided by principles of justice, equity, constitutional responsibility and the overall welfare of Cross River citizens,” the statement said.
The council urged the federal lawmakers from the state to demonstrate unity of purpose and speak with one voice on matters affecting the state’s economic future, noting that the people expect visible commitment, accountability and proactive engagement from their representatives.
IPAC also appealed to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and other public officials to exercise caution in making public remarks on sensitive matters connected to Cross River’s territorial and oil-related interests.
It noted that while it acknowledges the contributions of national leaders and the cordial relationship among neighbouring states, public statements from highly placed leaders carry considerable weight and should promote mutual respect, national unity and confidence among affected communities.
“Cross River State has a proud history of hospitality, peaceful coexistence and accommodation of people from all parts of Nigeria and beyond.
“However, this spirit of brotherhood should never be interpreted as a basis for diminishing or compromising the legitimate rights, resources and aspirations of the state and its people,” IPAC added.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue, democratic engagement and peaceful advocacy in pursuit of policies that will strengthen the development and prosperity of the state.
