Governor Abba Yusuf settles for Garo as Deputy

Releated Post

After a long consultation, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has finally transmitted the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for confirmation as Deputy Governor.

The much-awaited decision triggered overwhelming jubilation from supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who trooped out to celebrate the widely accepted choice.

In a statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Garo, a former local government commissioner, was considered among three nominations sent by APC legacy stakeholders.

The legacy group under the leadership of former national Chairman of APC Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, had forwarded the name of Murtala Sule Garo, Alhassan Kabiru Rurum, serving member of the House of Representatives from Rano/Kibiya/Bunkure Federal constituency and Sulaiman Bichi, former Secretary to the State Government.

In the statement, the Governor said the nomination is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers him to nominate a Deputy Governor where a vacancy exists.

The position became vacant following the voluntary resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026.

“Following a wide consultation with key stakeholders, the Governor has requested the Assembly to grant the necessary approval for Garo’s nomination.

“48-year-old Murtala Sule Garo is a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of service in both elective and appointed positions.

“He has served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to Kano State Governor and elected Kabo Local Government Chairman.

“He also served as Chairman of ALGON Kano, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Deputy Governorship Candidate of the APC in the 2023 general elections.

“His nomination is part of efforts to strengthen governance and sustain effective service delivery in Kano State”. The statement read.

The keen contest that led to the nomination of Garo divided members of the legacy stakeholders. Garo enjoyed the support of the largest majority, including the backing of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, one of the two ministries from Kano, one of the two APC senators and the majority of members of the House of Representatives from APC Kano.

Top among the descending voices against Garo is the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, who mobilized support for the nomination of Alhassan Rurum.

The Governor’s final endorsement has put wide speculation to rest.
