The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has redeployed its Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun State, Dr Mutiu Agboke.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan approved the redeployment ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election.
Dr Agboke himself broke the news of his redeployment to Ondo State in a terse message he shared on WhatsApp platform he created for newsmen in Osun State.
He said, “Good evening all. I have been transferred to Ondo state. I thank you most sincerely for the support given to me throughout my stay here in Osun state. May God Almighty support you all as well.”
The deployment may not be unconnected with a series of petitions of alleged partisanship against Agboke.
All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) were on the forefront in the demand for Agboke’s redeployment.
Not even the support of a coalition, Osun Democrats for Democracy (ODD) could sway the INEC boss. The coalition had on Wednesday rejected calls and expressed confidence in the leadership of INEC in the state, noting that the commission has demonstrated neutrality in its preparations for the August 15 governorship poll.
This did however not stop the INEC management in Abuja from replaying him.
Amupitan’s action was a total departure from the previous administration.
Under the Prof. Yakubu Mahmood’s led INEC such allegations were never taken seriously as it was the trend of the opposition party to accuse the REC of partisanship.
