A United Nations Habitat Ambassador, Benedict Edoh, has formally declared his intention to contest the Benue State governorship, promising a youth-driven political movement aimed at ending insecurity, economic stagnation, and what he described as exclusionary politics in the state.

Edoh made the declaration in Abuja, outlining a campaign strategy anchored on mass youth mobilisation, grassroots engagement, and a departure from the traditional ethnic-based voting patterns that have long defined Benue politics.

He also pledged to disrupt what he described as “regional politics” in Benue, where voting patterns have historically followed ethnic lines between major groups.

According to him, this approach has limited leadership choices and sustained division, insisting that a unified youth movement cutting across ethnic divides would redefine the state’s political landscape.

The governorship hopeful criticised the current administration in Benue State, led by Hyacinth Alia, accusing it of failing to protect lives and livelihoods.

He expressed concern over persistent killings and clashes, particularly between farmers and herders, describing the situation as unacceptable.

“Burying people has become a lifestyle. It is not normal. Human beings should be protected,” he said.

Edoh proposed a conflict-resolution strategy that emphasises dialogue and mutual accountability between farmers and herders, rather than what he termed a “blame approach” by past administrations.

He lamented the lack of industrial development in Benue, noting that farmers are increasingly unable to access their lands due to insecurity, thereby undermining the state’s agrarian base.

The aspirant disclosed that he would be contesting under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as stable and reform-oriented.

He expressed confidence in the party’s leadership under David Mark, adding that internal challenges within the party are part of a growth process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Come 2027, ADC will take leadership in Benue State,” he said.

Edoh pointed to his international exposure and experience in human development, stating that political office offers the most effective platform to implement impactful change.

He said his governance approach would combine local political understanding with global best practices, particularly in economic development and public administration.

“The only way to upload what I have in mind is through political office,” he noted.

Edoh reiterated his commitment to inclusive governance, security reforms, and economic revitalisation, positioning his candidacy as a generational shift aimed at empowering ordinary Nigerians and restoring public confidence in leadership.

He emphasised collective action over individual ambition, stating that electoral victory cannot be achieved by a single individual but through a united front of citizens, particularly young people who make up a significant portion of the state’s population.

“There is nothing like one person winning. With collective effort, me, you, and everybody, we will win,” he said.

The aspirant argued that Nigeria’s political system has historically disadvantaged young people due to the high cost of contesting elections, noting that financial barriers have been “weaponised” against ordinary citizens.

Drawing comparisons with political practices in the United States, Edoh said candidates abroad often receive institutional and community support, unlike in Nigeria where personal wealth heavily influences electoral success.

He, however, expressed confidence that a new strategy centred on mobilising over 75 per cent of Benue’s youthful population could overturn entrenched political structures.

“If the youth come together, they will choose one of their own. That time is now,” he said.
