Goods and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed on Monday morning after a fire broke out at Gezawa Market in the Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident was confirmed in a statement on Wednesday by Kabiru Jafaru, Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service.
According to Jafaru, the agency received a distress call at about 5:15 am on Monday, November 2, 2026, from a local resident, Ibrahim Sani. Firefighters were quickly dispatched to the scene, managing to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from engulfing the rest of the market.
”Upon receiving the distress call, our team promptly mobilised to the scene of the incident and successfully extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the market,” Jafaru stated.
He disclosed that four containers, seven temporary shops, and one permanent shop were completely destroyed in the inferno.
In the wake of the incident, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service urged business owners and residents across the state to exercise heightened safety precautions, noting the increased risk of fires following the onset of the harmattan season.
The outbreak comes just days after a massive fire destroyed 110 structures—comprising 75 permanent buildings and 35 temporary shops—at the Kofar Ruwa Timber Market in Kano metropolis on Saturday, October 31.
