The Nigerian Army has secured approval from the Federal Government to expand its operational structure from eight to 12 divisions and recruit 28,000 additional personnel, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, announced on Wednesday.
In a message reviewing his first 365 days in office, posted on the Nigerian Army’s official X handle, General Shaibu highlighted the force expansion as a major milestone designed to strengthen territorial defense, improve response times, and enhance protection for vulnerable communities nationwide.
“One of the most significant achievements in the past year is the Federal Government’s approval to expand the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions, along with the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel,” Shaibu stated.
The Army Chief outlined a five-pillar transformation agenda guiding his leadership: Professional Excellence, Robust Administration, Operational Readiness, Strategic Cooperation, and Exemplary Leadership. He emphasized that this framework remains anchored on a “Soldier-First Culture” prioritizing personnel welfare and professional development.
Addressing troops engaged in counter-terrorism, anti-banditry, and counter-insurgency operations across various theatres, Shaibu commended their dedication while paying tribute to fallen soldiers and reassuring wounded personnel of ongoing support.
On welfare and housing, the COAS revealed that 489 two-bedroom and 192 three-bedroom flats have been delivered to soldiers under the Affordable Home Ownership Option for All Soldiers Scheme, with further barrack renovations ongoing across the country.
General Shaibu urged personnel to maintain high professional standards, respect human rights, and adhere to rules of engagement as the military works to consolidate its gains against ongoing security challenges.
