The Ogun State Police Command has secured the conviction of Samson Okonkwo for his involvement in the manufacturing and distribution of counterfeit electrical cables bearing the brand name of Coleman Technical Industries Limited.
The judgment, delivered on September 24, 2026, by Magistrate O. P. Mobee at the Ojodu Abiodun Magistrate Court, was officially made public in a statement on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
The Trial and Evidence
Okonkwo, alongside accomplices who remain at large, was arraigned on April 10, 2025, on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, forgery, unlawful possession, and the fraudulent sale of fake electrical cables in the Akute area of Ogun State.
During the trial, the prosecution presented 317 coils of electrical cables packaged in fake Coleman branding, which were admitted as exhibits.
Magistrate Mobee found Okonkwo guilty and sentenced him in accordance with Section 3(3)(b) of the Merchandise Marks Act.
Police Warn Against Hazardous Fake Goods
Commending the investigative and prosecution teams, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, emphasized the grave public safety risks posed by counterfeit electrical supplies.
”Substandard electrical cables can increase the risk of electrical faults, fires, and electrocution, posing serious threats to lives and property,” DSP Babaseyi noted on behalf of the CP.
The police chief urged consumers to remain cautious when purchasing electrical products and called for stronger cooperation between manufacturers, regulators, and the public to stamp out economic crimes and fake goods across the state.
