Ebola Update: No Need to Cancel Rallies or Large Gatherings, Says Health Minister as Index Patient Recovers

Releated Post

Political rallies, conferences, and large public gatherings can continue as normal despite the confirmed Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, announced on Thursday.
Addressing journalists in Abuja during a status briefing on the national outbreak response, Prof. Pate emphasized that public policy decisions will remain strictly grounded in scientific data rather than public anxiety.
”We act on science and evidence. If the situation changes, we will adjust our guidance accordingly, but at this point, there is no need to disrupt public gatherings,” Pate assured.

Patient Showing “Encouraging Recovery”
Giving a direct status update on the index patient—a female traveler who arrived asymptomatic from Uganda before developing fever days later—the minister shared promising clinical feedback.
The patient is currently isolated and receiving specialized care, with recent lab tests reflecting significant physical recovery.
”Thankfully, that individual has been taken care of and, in fact, is recovering,” Prof. Pate revealed. “Today, I spoke to the clinicians, and I understand that laboratory results are showing great improvement, and there is a possibility that she would recover from this… We have to continue to pray and work hard to ensure that she survives it.”

High-Risk Contacts Quarantined; Presidency Funds NCDC
To ensure zero community transmission, contact-tracing teams from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and FCT health authorities have categorized all exposed individuals across her travel, hospital, and residential interactions:
High-Risk Exposures: Locked down under full facility-based quarantine.
Secondary Contacts: Placed under enforced home isolation with daily symptom checks.
Prof. Pate disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has immediately released additional emergency funding to the NCDC to power contact monitoring, laboratory testing, and hospital logistics.
The response is currently being coordinated through the activated Incident Management System in direct liaison with the Presidential Task Force, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), and the National Economic Council (NEC).
