The High Commission of India in Abuja, in collaboration with the Indian Cultural Association (ICA), Abuja, and the Indian Women Empowerment Association (IWEA), has hosted Dandiya Night 2026 to celebrate Indian cultural heritage and strengthen the longstanding relationship between India and Nigeria.

The event, held on October 18, 2026, at the Chancery premises of the High Commission, brought together members of the Indian community, heads of diplomatic missions, Nigerian dignitaries and friends of India for an evening of cultural performances and community engagement.

The celebration featured traditional Indian attire, Dandiya and Garba dances, highlighting the richness of Indian cultural traditions and the festive atmosphere associated with Navratri, an important festival in the Indian calendar.

Addressing the gathering, India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Abhishek Singh, highlighted the significance of Navratri and commended the ICA and IWEA for their collaborative efforts in preserving cultural traditions and promoting community participation.

Singh noted that cultural celebrations such as Dandiya Night provided valuable opportunities for members of the Indian community to sustain their heritage while sharing their traditions with people from other cultural backgrounds.

He also emphasised the importance of such gatherings in fostering closer relationships among communities and promoting greater appreciation of India’s cultural diversity.

The High Commissioner highlighted the contributions of the Indian diaspora in Nigeria, which comprises more than 60,000 people, to the country’s economic and social development.

According to him, the Indian community plays an important role in strengthening bilateral relations, serving as a bridge between the peoples of India and Nigeria through business engagements, social interactions and cultural exchanges.

He noted that the community’s presence in Nigeria continues to provide opportunities for cooperation and mutual understanding, reinforcing the longstanding ties between the two countries.

Singh further underscored the importance of cultural diplomacy and people-to-people exchanges in consolidating the cordial relationship between India and Nigeria.

He explained that beyond formal diplomatic engagements, cultural interactions remained an effective means of bringing people together, encouraging dialogue and deepening appreciation of shared values and traditions.

The High Commissioner encouraged members of the Indian community to continue promoting their cultural heritage and to welcome their Nigerian friends to Indian festivals and celebrations.

He said such inclusive engagements could help strengthen interpersonal relationships, broaden cultural awareness and create more opportunities for meaningful interaction between both communities.

The performances at Dandiya Night 2026 offered participants an opportunity to experience traditional Indian music, dance and festive customs associated with Navratri, a festival celebrated with devotion, community gatherings and cultural activities across different parts of India.

The event also underscored the role of cultural associations and community organisations in preserving traditions among Indians living abroad while facilitating engagement with their host communities.

For the Indian diaspora in Nigeria, activities such as Dandiya Night provide a platform for transmitting cultural practices across generations and maintaining connections with their heritage while participating in Nigeria’s diverse social environment.

The collaboration between the High Commission, ICA Abuja and IWEA also highlighted the contribution of community-based organisations to cultural promotion and the strengthening of social bonds among members of the diaspora.

India and Nigeria maintain longstanding relations supported by diplomatic engagement, trade, investment and cooperation across several sectors. Cultural diplomacy and community interactions complement these formal relationships by creating opportunities for citizens of both countries to develop closer personal connections.

Through festivals and other cultural initiatives, diplomatic missions and community organisations can promote intercultural dialogue, challenge misconceptions and encourage greater understanding between different societies.

Dandiya Night 2026 therefore provided an avenue for celebrating India’s cultural identity while reinforcing the value of inclusive community engagement in a multicultural country such as Nigeria.
