The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described the legislative bye-elections conducted across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states as critical operational exercises for strengthening preparations ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, stated this on Saturday while personally presiding over the Commission’s monitoring operations at its National Situation Room in Abuja.
Amupitan emphasised that every electoral contest, regardless of its scale or nature, provided an opportunity for the Commission to assess its preparedness, identify operational gaps and improve the delivery of future elections.
According to him, the four bye-elections constituted important benchmarks for evaluating the country’s electoral infrastructure and testing the Commission’s logistical, technological and administrative arrangements ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The Commission conducted legislative bye-elections in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency of Kano State, Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies of Bauchi State, and Udu State Constituency of Delta State.
Speaking on the significance of the exercises, the INEC Chairman said the elections would provide the Commission with practical insights to guide its preparations for the next general election.
“These four bye-elections provide indispensable operational lessons for the Commission as we systematically chart our roadmap toward the 2027 General Election,” Amupitan said.
He stressed the need for the Commission to approach every electoral exercise as an integral part of its broader preparations, rather than treating bye-elections as routine assignments with limited implications.
“We must resist the temptation to view any exercise as merely an ordinary bye-election. Every election is a critical component of our broader preparations for the 2027 General Election, allowing us to continuously audit our logistics framework, stress-test our technological deployment, and evaluate administrative field readiness,” he said.
The Chairman’s remarks underscored the importance of using elections held between general election cycles to review the Commission’s operational procedures and strengthen its capacity to manage larger and more complex electoral exercises.
At the National Situation Room in Abuja, Amupitan was accompanied by National Commissioners, senior management officials and members of the technical team as reports from the various states were received and assessed.
The Situation Room served as a central point for monitoring developments from the polling areas, enabling the Commission’s leadership to review field reports and respond to emerging administrative and operational concerns.
The INEC Chairman also assured Nigerians that the Commission remained committed to safeguarding electoral integrity and improving the efficiency of its election management processes.
He explained that challenges identified before polling day were addressed through the Commission’s monitoring and intervention mechanisms.
“Our primary mandate in the Situation Room is monitoring and proactive crisis resolution,” Amupitan said.
“Whatever administrative or field challenges arose in before the day of the elections, the Commission was able to nip them in the bud effectively. We remain committed to refining our processes so that every subsequent exercise reflects higher standards of efficiency and public confidence.”
The Chairman’s comments highlighted the role of early identification and resolution of operational difficulties in ensuring smoother electoral processes and strengthening public confidence in election administration.
The multi-state exercise also provided an opportunity for INEC officials to assess the performance of personnel and technical systems deployed across the participating constituencies.
With preparations for the 2027 General Election gathering momentum, the Commission’s evaluation of the bye-elections is expected to inform subsequent reviews of its logistics, technology deployment and administrative coordination.
Amupitan further acknowledged the contributions of officials who participated in the monitoring exercise, particularly the technical team responsible for supporting the Situation Room’s operations.
He expressed appreciation to all those present for helping the Commission monitor the elections across the four states and assess field performance.
“I thank everyone present in the Situation Room, especially the technical team, for ensuring that the Commission was able to monitor the multi-state exercise seamlessly and assess the field performance without any hitch,” he said.
The INEC Chairman’s assessment reinforces the Commission’s stated approach of treating electoral exercises as opportunities for continuous institutional learning and operational improvement ahead of the 2027 General Election.
