Two unidentified men were beaten to death by a mob in Calabar South, Cross River in the early hours of Sunday, August 30, 2026, after they were allegedly suspected of robbery along Ekpo Abasi, near Yellow Duke.
The State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement released by the PPRO, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, saying police operatives responded to the scene, documented the incident and commenced preliminary investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and identify the deceased.
According to the Command, the two men were reportedly apprehended and attacked by residents before officers arrived.
“The remains have been evacuated from the scene with the assistance of the relevant local government authorities for appropriate preservation,” the statement said.
Police said investigations are ongoing to determine the identities of the victims and the full sequence of events that led to the attack.
The Command used the incident to caution against jungle justice, urging residents to hand suspected offenders over to law enforcement instead of taking the law into their own hands.
“No individual has the right to take the law into their own hands.
“Members of the public are advised to always report suspected criminals to the police or other lawful authorities for investigation and prosecution,” the Police warned.
The Command assured that further details would be made public as the investigation progresses.
