The Delta State chapter of the Obidient Movement and the OK Movement have intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the two political support groups convening a town hall meeting in Asaba to promote unity, reconcile members and unveil their developmental priorities for the state.
The well-attended meeting, held at Orchid Hotel, Asaba, brought together supporters, political leaders, candidates and stakeholders of the movements, which are backing the presidential aspirations of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The gathering provided a platform for members to deliberate on strategies ahead of the 2027 elections, exchange ideas on strengthening the movements at the grassroots and address internal disagreements that could undermine their electoral prospects.
In his welcome address, the State Coordinator of the movement, Hon. Favour Emerure, thanked participants and political stakeholders for their commitment to the cause.
Emerure said the town hall meeting was convened primarily to strengthen unity among members, promote constructive political engagement and ensure that supporters were adequately aligned ahead of the forthcoming elections.
He also stressed the importance of reconciliation, urging members who had been affected by disagreements to put their differences aside and work collectively towards achieving the movement’s political objectives.
A major highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a developmental agenda by the NDC governorship candidate for Delta State, Deacon Chris Iyovware.
Iyovware outlined his vision for transforming the state’s economy, with particular emphasis on industrialisation, agriculture and employment generation.
He pledged that, if elected, his administration would move to revive all 35 moribund industries across Delta State as part of efforts to rebuild the state’s productive capacity, expand economic opportunities and create jobs for its growing youth population.
The governorship candidate also promised to promote mechanised agriculture as a strategy for improving food production, strengthening food security and making farming more commercially viable for residents.
According to him, revitalising industries and modernising agriculture would provide sustainable employment opportunities while reducing dependence on government employment and stimulating economic growth across the state.
The Senatorial Candidate for Delta Central and former Deputy Speaker of the 9th National Assembly, Senator Ovie Omo-Age, also addressed the gathering, outlining his legislative priorities if elected.
Omo-Age placed security among his major areas of concern, expressing his commitment to promoting community policing as a means of improving intelligence gathering, strengthening collaboration between security agencies and communities, and tackling insecurity across Delta Central and the state.
He argued that greater community participation in security would enable authorities to respond more effectively to emerging threats and improve the safety of residents.
Also speaking, the Senatorial Candidate for Delta South, Rt. Hon. Victor Ochie, commended members for their strong turnout and urged them to remain united as the 2027 elections approach.
Ochie called on supporters to vote for candidates of the NDC across the board, stressing the need for coordinated grassroots mobilisation to translate the enthusiasm generated by the movement into electoral support.
Other political leaders at the meeting included Diokpe Delly Ajofo and NDC chieftain and Obidient leader in Delta State, Hon. Jonny Mamba Agboifi.
Both leaders reaffirmed their support for the party and its candidates, while urging members to strengthen their presence at the grassroots and sustain mobilisation efforts ahead of the elections.
They also emphasised the importance of unity among supporters, particularly in overcoming internal disagreements and building a stronger political structure capable of competing effectively in the 2027 elections.
The meeting featured an interactive question-and-answer session during which members had the opportunity to engage directly with the candidates and seek clarification on their political programmes, development plans and aspirations for the state.
Iyovware used the session to elaborate on his proposed roadmap for Delta State, while responding to concerns and questions raised by participants regarding governance, economic development, employment and other issues affecting residents.
The interaction provided an opportunity for the candidates to communicate their priorities directly to supporters and for members to express their expectations ahead of the elections.
The organisers described the gathering as an important step towards consolidating the political structures of the movements and fostering greater cooperation among their members.
