Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Zimbabwe, Philip Kuroghobogha Ikurusi, has presented his Letters of Credence to Zimbabwean President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa.
The presentation took place at the State House in Harare on Thursday, August 13, 2026, formally marking the commencement of Ambassador Ikurusi’s diplomatic assignment in Zimbabwe.
Following the ceremony, Ikurusi held a bilateral meeting with President Mnangagwa, during which both sides reviewed the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Zimbabwe and explored opportunities to expand cooperation across key sectors.
President Mnangagwa congratulated Ikurusi on his appointment and reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Nigeria.
The Zimbabwean President also acknowledged Nigeria’s support for his country, particularly Nigeria’s position against the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.
Mnangagwa expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s backing of Zimbabwe’s successful candidature for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term.
The Zimbabwean leader further welcomed ongoing efforts to revitalise the Joint Commission for Cooperation between the two countries, describing it as an important mechanism for advancing bilateral relations and identifying areas of mutual interest.
In his remarks, Ambassador Ikurusi conveyed the greetings and goodwill of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as those of the Government and people of Nigeria, to President Mnangagwa and the people of Zimbabwe.
He expressed appreciation for the reception accorded him and the opportunity to formally begin his diplomatic assignment in the country.
Ikurusi reaffirmed Nigeria’s determination to strengthen bilateral cooperation with Zimbabwe, particularly in areas capable of generating practical economic and developmental benefits for both countries.
He identified trade and investment, agriculture and food security, mining and solid minerals, energy, manufacturing, information and communication technology and the digital economy as priority areas for enhanced cooperation.
The Nigerian envoy stressed the need for both countries to move beyond diplomatic engagements and identify practical and mutually beneficial areas of collaboration that would translate into tangible benefits for their citizens.
He also reiterated Nigeria’s support for African-led and African-owned solutions to the continent’s challenges, reaffirming the country’s commitment to promoting peace and security, democratic governance and regional integration.
Beyond economic cooperation, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of strengthening people-to-people relations between Nigerians and Zimbabweans.
He expressed Nigeria’s readiness to promote greater collaboration in academic exchanges, culture, tourism and youth development, describing such engagements as important avenues for deepening understanding and strengthening the historical bonds between the two countries.
Ikurusi assured President Mnangagwa of his personal commitment to working closely with the Zimbabwean Government and relevant stakeholders throughout his tenure to further strengthen Nigeria-Zimbabwe relations.
He said his diplomatic assignment would focus on promoting mutually beneficial cooperation and advancing areas of shared interest between the two countries.
President Mnangagwa, in turn, assured the Nigerian Ambassador of his support and cooperation in the discharge of his diplomatic responsibilities.
The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the presentation of the Letters of Credence represented an important step towards consolidating the historic relationship between Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
The ministry said Nigeria remained committed to advancing bilateral cooperation with Zimbabwe within the broader framework of shared African interests, mutual respect and common aspirations for peace, stability and development.
The renewed diplomatic engagement comes as both countries seek to expand cooperation beyond traditional political relations into trade, investment, agriculture, energy, mining, technology, education and cultural exchanges.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed optimism that Ambassador Ikurusi’s tenure would provide an opportunity to strengthen existing ties and unlock new areas of collaboration capable of delivering concrete benefits to Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
