The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Jamaica, identifying investment, the creative economy, agriculture, technology, education and youth empowerment as priority areas for expanded cooperation between the two countries.
This was contained in a goodwill message issued on Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to commemorate Jamaica’s Independence Anniversary.
In the statement, the Federal Government congratulated the Government and people of Jamaica on the national celebration, while expressing optimism that both countries would continue to build on decades of diplomatic friendship and shared cultural heritage.
Signed by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the statement described Nigeria and Jamaica as nations connected by deep historical and people-to-people ties rooted in their common African ancestry.
According to the ministry, those historical links have evolved into enduring diplomatic relations characterised by cooperation across several sectors, including trade, education, tourism, culture, sports and multilateral diplomacy.
The government said it remains committed to broadening those partnerships to unlock greater economic opportunities and strengthen South-South cooperation.
It identified investment promotion, the creative economy, agriculture, education, technological innovation, climate resilience and youth development as strategic sectors capable of driving sustainable growth and delivering mutual benefits to both countries.
The statement noted that collaboration in these areas would not only deepen bilateral engagement but also create opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship and inclusive economic development.
The ministry further observed that Nigeria and Jamaica have consistently worked together through international organisations, including the Commonwealth and the United Nations, where both countries continue to advocate for issues affecting developing nations.
Beyond economic cooperation, the Federal Government said it values the enduring cultural relationship between both countries, pointing to their shared African heritage as a strong foundation for expanding exchanges in arts, music, education and tourism.
The ministry also praised Jamaica’s democratic journey and its achievements in socio-economic development, describing the Caribbean nation as an important partner whose contributions to regional and international affairs continue to attract global recognition.
As Jamaica marks another year of independence, Nigeria expressed confidence that relations between the two countries would continue to flourish through stronger diplomatic engagement, increased trade and enhanced collaboration in sectors critical to sustainable development.
The Federal Government wished the Government and people of Jamaica lasting peace, unity, progress and prosperity, while reiterating its readiness to work closely with the Caribbean nation in advancing common goals and strengthening cooperation across the Global South.
