In a renewed effort to reconnect Nigerians with unclaimed investments and strengthen confidence in the capital market, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will on Thursday, August 6, 2026, hold a special Investor Clinic in Abuja to educate investors and beneficiaries on how to recover unclaimed capital market assets.

The programme, tagged “Probate and Unclaimed Monies Awareness and Investor Clinic,” is part of a nationwide awareness campaign initiated by the Commission in partnership with Meristem Registrars and Probate Services Limited to enhance investor protection, improve financial literacy and deepen public trust in Nigeria’s capital market.

Speaking on the initiative, the Director-General of the SEC, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, said the campaign underscored the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding investors’ interests by simplifying the process of reclaiming unclaimed investments and inherited assets.

According to him, investor protection remains central to the SEC’s regulatory mandate.

“Through this awareness campaign and Investor Clinic, we are bringing regulators and market operators together to help investors and beneficiaries understand the claims process, recover investments due to them and strengthen public confidence in the Nigerian capital market,” Agama said.

The Commission disclosed that thousands of investors and beneficiaries across Nigeria remain unaware that they may be entitled to unclaimed funds arising from scheme considerations, return monies, mergers and acquisitions, or inherited investments belonging to deceased relatives. It noted that the challenge is largely due to limited knowledge of the documentation and procedures required to process such claims.

SEC explained that the one-day event, scheduled to take place at its Abuja headquarters, will assemble representatives of key institutions involved in investor protection, estate administration and capital market operations to provide practical guidance and educational sessions on recovering unclaimed investments.

Participants will also have the opportunity to engage directly with SEC officials, registrars and other capital market professionals through one-on-one consultations on issues relating to share ownership, probate, share transmission, beneficiary claims and other investment-related matters.

The Commission encouraged investors with outstanding capital market claims, shareholders with unclaimed monies arising from mergers, acquisitions or unallotted securities, beneficiaries of deceased investors, executors and administrators of estates, legal practitioners, investment advisers and prospective investors to attend the free clinic.

To facilitate faster processing, participants were advised to come with available supporting documents, including valid means of identification, share certificates, Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) statements, dividend warrants, bank account details, probate or letters of administration, death certificates and other documents relating to ownership or claims.

However, the Commission assured that individuals without complete documentation would still receive professional guidance on the requirements and steps needed to regularise their claims.

Reiterating its commitment to protecting investors, the SEC urged members of the public to transact only through SEC-registered market operators, warning that genuine capital market claims should never be processed outside approved regulatory channels.

The Commission reaffirmed its resolve to build a fair, transparent and inclusive capital market where investors are well-informed, their rights are protected, and confidence in the nation’s investment ecosystem continues to grow.
