The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has thrown its weight behind the House of Representatives Minority Caucus’ call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to either demonstrate effective leadership in addressing the nation’s mounting challenges or resign from office.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday and signed by its Acting National Chairman, Chief Peter Ameh, the opposition coalition said it fully endorsed the position taken by the Minority Caucus, arguing that the current administration must urgently improve governance and deliver tangible results for Nigerians.

The CUPP maintained that leadership is fundamentally a responsibility to citizens and not a privilege, stressing that public office holders who fail to improve the lives of the people should be prepared to step aside.

According to the group, the Tinubu administration must immediately intensify efforts to tackle the country’s worsening security situation, economic difficulties, and the declining welfare of citizens.

The coalition stated that Nigerians continue to face severe hardships amid rising living costs, persistent insecurity in several parts of the country, and growing concerns over the effectiveness of government policies aimed at improving economic conditions.

“In a sane clime, any elected official who refuses to produce results of good governance that will help make the lives of the people better should honourably resign,” the statement said.

The opposition body argued that the President and his administration must demonstrate greater commitment to addressing the concerns of ordinary Nigerians, noting that effective governance should be measured by visible improvements in the quality of life of citizens.

CUPP said it shares the view expressed by the House Minority Caucus that the government must either rise to the occasion and provide effective leadership or consider relinquishing power to those capable of delivering meaningful results.

The coalition further emphasized that public confidence in government depends largely on its ability to respond decisively to pressing national issues and alleviate the suffering of the population.

The group reiterated its commitment to promoting democratic accountability, transparency, and good governance.

“CUPP remains committed to advocating for good governance, accountability, and the welfare of all Nigerians. We urge the President to heed this call and take immediate, visible steps to alleviate the suffering of citizens across the country,” the statement added.

The coalition also pledged to continue monitoring developments in the country and to remain vocal on issues affecting the wellbeing of Nigerians.

“The CUPP will continue to monitor developments closely and will not hesitate to speak the truth in the best interest of the Nigerian people,” Ameh stated.

The endorsement by CUPP adds to growing political criticism from opposition figures and groups who have expressed concerns over the country’s economic and security challenges.

However, the Presidency has consistently defended its policies, maintaining that ongoing reforms are necessary to stabilize the economy and lay the foundation for long-term growth.
