Murtala Ajaka, the former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi, has announced his intention to contest for the Kogi-east senatorial seat in the 2027 elections.

In a statement published on Facebook, Ajaka said he had received “countless calls” and engaged with different stakeholders from Kogi-east asking him to offer himself for service.

Ajaka said, upon reflection of the numerous calls, he has decided to offer himself to serve the Kogi-east senatorial district on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former governorship candidate said he looks forward to “deeper consultations” with Usman Ododo, governor of Kogi state.

“I have received countless calls, hosted numerous visits, and engaged in meaningful discussions with elders, political associates, youth groups, friends, and well-meaning stakeholders across Kogi East and beyond,” the statement reads.

“These conversations have consistently centered on the future of our politics, the direction of our people, and the need for purposeful representation.

“Many have urged me, with sincerity and conviction, to step forward and offer myself for service in the Senate.

“While I have taken time to reflect carefully on these calls, one moment that stood out profoundly was the recent visit by a respected delegation of Kogi East elders who came to my home.

“Their counsel, wisdom, and unity of purpose further reinforce the responsibility we all share toward the progress and development of our land.

“In respect of the wishes of our people, in honour of the prevailing understanding among stakeholders, and in the overriding interest of peace, unity, and collective advancement, I have decided to answer this call.

“I will, therefore, offer myself to serve as the Senator representing Kogi East Senatorial District.

“This decision is also firmly guided by my commitment to the stability, unity, and progress of our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

Recently, Ajaka rejoined the APC after he left the ruling party for the SDP in the build-up to the November 2023 Kogi governorship election.

Ajaka came second in the 2023 Kogi election after he polled 259,052 votes, while Usman Ododo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the winner with 446, 237 votes.
