Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, PDP, Gombe North, has resumed office as the new Senate Committee Chairman on Public Accounts following the defection of Senator Aliyu Ahmed Wadada from the PDP to the APC.
The Senate had earlier announced the significant leadership change of this key oversight committees during its plenary.
Malam Farouk Yarma, spokesman to Senator Dankwambo, the immediate past two term Governor of Gombe State, told our Correspondent that the action forms part of the Senate’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its oversight functions and enhance accountability in the management of public funds.
The Public Accounts Committee plays a vital role in scrutinizing Government expenditures and audit reports, making its leadership crucial to ensuring transparency and fiscal discipline.
Senator Dankwambo, also a former Accountant-General of the Federation, is widely regarded as a seasoned financial expert who has an extensive experience in public finance, taxation, forensic accounting, and governance.
Senator Dankwambo’s Chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee is expected to significantly improve the committee’s effectiveness in executing its mandate.
Prior to this appointment, Senator Dankwambo served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics.
Chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee is traditionally reserved for a member of the opposition in line with legislative convention.
The development has attracted the attention of political observers, who consider Dankwambo’s appointment as a strategic step toward strengthening accountability mechanisms within the National Assembly.
