The Federal Government of Nigeria has commended the Saudi Arabia for offering fully funded scholarships to 50 Nigerian students in petroleum and mineral studies, describing the initiative as a strategic boost to human capital development and a reinforcement of longstanding bilateral relations.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the commendation on Monday in Abuja while receiving the Saudi Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef Bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, during a courtesy visit.

Idris said the scholarship programme aligns with the Federal Government’s broader economic agenda of strengthening critical sectors through capacity building, particularly in petroleum and solid minerals two pillars of Nigeria’s diversification drive.

“This is not just a scholarship programme; it is a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future,” the minister said, noting that the initiative would help build a pipeline of skilled professionals needed to drive growth in key industries.

He emphasised the long-term value of the programme, which is expected to run annually, enabling a continuous stream of Nigerian students to benefit.

According to him, the sustained nature of the initiative would deepen its impact on national development.

The minister also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Saudi Arabia, assuring that ongoing agreements between both countries would be expedited.

He referenced pending Memoranda of Understanding in areas such as broadcasting and other sectors, expressing optimism that their implementation would yield mutual benefits.

Idris conveyed Nigeria’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia amid ongoing tensions in the Gulf region, expressing hope for peaceful and diplomatic resolutions to emerging challenges.

Ambassador Al-Balawi said the scholarship offer, facilitated through King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, reflects the strength and sincerity of relations between both countries.

He disclosed that the fully funded package covers tuition, travel, accommodation, and monthly stipends for beneficiaries.

“This initiative reflects genuine cooperation and real investment in the future of Nigerian youth,” the ambassador said.

Al-Balawi also highlighted ongoing efforts to expand bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, describing Nigeria and Saudi Arabia as major regional economic powers with significant untapped potential for partnership.

He further conveyed the appreciation of the Saudi leadership to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for Nigeria’s show of solidarity, noting that it underscores the strength of diplomatic ties between both nations.
