President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to the President-elect of the Republic of Benin, His Excellency Romuald Wadagni, following his victory in the country’s presidential election held on April 12, 2026.
Wadagni, who currently serves as Benin’s Minister of Finance, reportedly secured an overwhelming majority of the votes, earning a strong mandate from the Beninese electorate.
In a congratulatory letter personally signed by him, President Tinubu described the victory as a reflection of the confidence the people of Benin have in Wadagni’s leadership and his distinguished record of public service.
“Your victory reflects the trust the Beninese people have placed in your vision and your distinguished record of service as Minister of Finance,” Tinubu stated.
The Nigerian leader also commended the government and people of Benin for conducting a peaceful and credible electoral process, noting that the transition represents a significant milestone in the nation’s democratic journey.
“This transition marks a significant chapter in your nation’s history. I commend the people of Benin for their resilience and commitment to the democratic process and for maintaining peace during the election cycle,” the letter read.
Highlighting the longstanding relationship between the two neighbouring countries, President Tinubu emphasized their shared history of friendship, cultural affinity, and cooperation. He expressed optimism about deepening bilateral ties under Wadagni’s administration.
“Our two nations share a long history of friendship, cultural ties, and cooperation. I therefore look forward to working closely with your administration to further strengthen our bilateral relations, enhance regional security, and promote economic prosperity within the ECOWAS sub-region and the African Union,” he added.
As Wadagni prepares to assume office, President Tinubu wished him wisdom, strength, and success in the discharge of his responsibilities, assuring him of Nigeria’s unwavering support.
“As you prepare to assume the onerous responsibilities of the high office of the Presidency, I wish you great wisdom, fortitude, and success. Please rest assured of my unstinting support and cooperation in this regard,” the letter concluded.
