MTV to Shut Down Its Remaining Global Music Channels

Releated Post

After more than four decades of shaping global pop culture, MTV is officially bringing an era to a close. By the end of 2025, the network will shut down all of its remaining global music-video channels—those built around nonstop music, concerts, live sets, and decade-based programming.

The closures will affect channels including MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, MTV Live, and several regional music-focused offshoots. Together, these channels represent the last remnants of MTV’s original identity as a 24-hour music television network.

What will remain is the main MTV entertainment network, which has long shifted its focus away from music videos toward reality shows, documentaries, and pop-culture programming. That transition has been underway for years, but this move makes it official: MTV’s music-video era is ending.

Industry insiders say the decision reflects a simple reality—audiences no longer watch music on traditional television. Over the past decade, viewers have migrated almost entirely to digital platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and streaming services, where music is instant, on-demand, and closely tied to social media trends.

Music discovery, once driven by TV countdowns and curated video blocks, is now shaped by algorithms, short-form clips, and viral moments. As a result, MTV’s music-only channels have struggled to maintain viewership in an increasingly digital-first media landscape.

For many fans, the shutdown is deeply nostalgic. MTV was once the place where audiences discovered new artists, stayed up late watching concert specials, and planned weekends around countdown shows. From the early days of music videos to themed channels celebrating the sounds of the 1980s and 1990s, MTV helped define generations of music fans.

The end of these channels serves as a reminder of how quickly the way people experience music continues to evolve—from television screens to smartphones, from scheduled programming to instant access.

While MTV’s music channels will disappear by the end of 2025—44 years after the network first launched—the brand itself is not going away. MTV will continue operating as an entertainment-focused network, reflecting its transformation from a music pioneer into a broader pop-culture platform.
