The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Monday apologised over the leakage of English Language paper.
The leakage was reported to have taken place on Wednesday May 28, 2025 at some centres in the country, which led to candidates being asked to sit for the examination at odd hours.
The Head of National Office (HNO), WAEC, Nigeria, Dr. Amos Dangut, apologised and made the appeal when he appeared before the Committee on Basic Education Examination Bodies, House of Representatives on Monday June 2, 2025 in Abuja.
Dr. Dangut explained that the English Language paper leakage was an unfortunate situation due to compromise on the part of their printing partners.
He said the Council decided to reprint the paper to prevent malpractice and national outcry, adding that the decision led to delay of the question papers’ arrival at their designated centres.
“We discovered that the English Language paper was compromised three days before the examination and we have no option but to reset and reprint the paper.
“We reprinted for two days and started conveying the paper 24 hours before the exam day but before the paper got to some centres, it was late, hence some candidates write into night”, Dr. Dangut explained.
He assured the Committee that such act will not repeat itself as those involved in the paper leakage are currently being investigated and when investigations are concluded, they will surely face the consequence
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Oboku Abonsizibe Oforji, representing Yenagoa/Opokuma Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, advised the Council to put its house together to ensure that such anomaly did not repeat itself.
He said the future of millions of young Nigerians are tied to WAEC for their tertiary education and there’s no need to traumatise them.
