The National Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday confirmed the reported explosion that occurred on Monday in Abuja was caused by a suicide bomber.
NEMA stated on its X handle that its team promptly responded to the incident upon receiving the alert.
A suspected suicide bomber was killed in an attempted infiltration into the Mogadishu Cantonment (popularly known as Abacha Barracks) in Abuja, after an Improvised Explosive Device he was carrying detonated.
The police, however, urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, assuring the public that there is no cause for alarm.
NEMA explained that the agency was alerted about the explosion at about 1:47 pm in front of Abacha Barracks along Abuja-Keffi Road, and its team was immediately activated to coordinate the response.
“AYA ERAB team was immediately activated to coordinate response. The team met stern-looking security personnel at the already cordoned scene.
“Information gathered revealed that a suicide bomber attempted to sneak into the barracks but met his waterloo as the IED exploded on him while trying to negotiate an entry.
“The suicide bomber died instantly leaving one passerby injured. The EOD unit of the NPF evacuated the injured to the National Hospital and took over the scene for further investigation; bringing the operation to a close at 17:29hrs.
“Stakeholders present included NEMA, Military, NPF, DSS, and FRSC,” the message read.
