INEC offices attacked 50 times in four years

The offices of the independent National Electoral Commission in the last four years suffered 50 attacks.

The attacks spread  across 15 states.

The breakdown of the various attacks was contained in a data released by INEC on Friday.

The breakdown showed that in 2019, the Commission recorded 8 attacks; 2020, 22 attacks; 2021, 12 attacks and in 2022, 8 attacks.

The states listed in 2019 are Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Bayelsa, Anambra, Imo, Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Enugu, Ebonyi, Kaduna, Borno, and Taraba States.

In 2020, INEC offices in Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Imo, Abia, Cross River, Anambra, Borno, were touched. 

In 2021, Kaduna, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Akwa-Ibom states felt the fire power of arsonists. 

2022 was the turn of Ogun, Osun, Ebonyi, Imo, and Enugu states were attacked.

A further breaking down reveals that INEC offices in Imo state recorded the highest attacks with 11 incidents, Osun 7; Akwa-Ibom 5; Enugu 5; Ebonyi 4; Cross River 4; Abia 4; Anambra 2; Taraba 2; Borno 1 Ogun 1; Lagos 1; Bayelsa 1; Ondo 1; and Kaduna 1.

The nature of the incidents include arson 20; vandalization 26; and arson and vandalization 4.

The data also revealed that 20 of the attacks were caused by unknown gunmen and hoodlums; EndSARS protest triggered 18 attacks; thuggery during elections 6; post-election violence 4; bandit attack 1 and Boko Haram attack 1.
