150m children subject to child labour globally….UNESCO

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO on Monday revealed that over 150million children are subject to child labour accounting for 1 in 10 children around the world.

The Secretary General, Nigerian National Commission (NAT-COM) UNESCO, Olagunju Idowu stated this during the commemoration of the International Day for the remembrance of slave trade and its abolition in Abuja.

Speaking on the theme “Modern Day Slavery, A National Questions: Protecting the Future Generation”, Idowu said slavery is not history as it still manifest today in form of child labour, forced marriages, death bondage amongst others.

“Slavery is not simply a matter of history. It also manifests itself today through descent-based servitude, forced labour, child labour, trafficking in persons for the purpose of exploitation, including sexual exploitation and forced recruitment of children in armed conflict.”

Idowu further stated that “Nigeria has experienced an increase in the cases of human trafficking in recent times due to dwindling economy and poverty rate. Research has revealed that the people of the Niger Delta have been found more vulnerable to human trafficking.”

Quoting the Secretary General of United Nations in 2020, Antonio Guterres, Idowu said the poor and marginalized groups, ethnic minorities, indigenous people and migrants are disproportionally affected by contemporary forms of slavery.

He therefore urged that collective efforts has to be made aviavaila by all concerned to put an end to the menance while victims and survivors should also be empowered and protected.

He also commended the Federal Government for setting up agencies to tackle the issues affecting Nigerians.
