Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan has assured the youths across the country that the National Assembly will ensure justice for victims of misconduct and rights abuses by personnel of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police.

In a statement he personally signed on Monday, Lawan said that as part of moves to discourage impunity, the National Assembly will insist that the masterminds and perpetrators of the alleged abuses are prosecuted and sanctioned to serve as deterrent to others.

The President of the Senate and has also assured that the Lawmakers will work in synergy with the Executive to ensure that the five-point demands of the #EndSARS protesters which the government has committed itself to are fully implemented.

The statement read, ” I want to seize this opportunity to re-assure our youths that the National Assembly will collaborate with the Executive to ensure justice for victims of misconduct and rights abuses by personnel of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police.

“In the same vein, to discourage impunity, we will insist that the perpetrators of the alleged abuses be prosecuted and sanctioned as appropriate.

“We will also work with the Executive to ensure that the five-point demands of the #EndSARS protesters which the government has committed itself to are fully implemented.

“In spite of the unfortunate hijack of the protests against police brutality by hoodlums to unleash horrifying violence, arson, looting and wanton destruction of public and private property on the country, we will ensure that government fulfills the commitment it has made to the well-meaning agitators for police reform and good governance.

“The National Assembly is fully committed to putting the necessary legislation in place for comprehensive reform of the Police to enhance their institutional integrity and efficiency.

"we seek a path out of this regrettable crisis, my heart goes out to the victims of the reprehensible violence and criminality witnessed in the last few days in many parts of the country.

“I send my condolences to the families of our security and law enforcement agents who have made the Supreme sacrifices in the course of their service to their fatherland.

“I also call for a thorough investigation of every criminal act that we have witnessed in the past few weeks with a view to bringing to justice all those elements who have so callously destroyed public and private property.

“Now that the mindless carnage has distorted the purpose of the protests, I urge the youths to join hands with the authorities in bringing an urgent cessation to the violence.

“I call on our patriotic youths to leave the streets as Government has heard their voices and is addressing their grievances. This is also necessary to avoid unwittingly continuing to provide covers for the criminals and fifth columnists in our midst.

“However, as regards those criminal elements unleashing terror on our cities under the guise of the protest, I urge the security agencies to forthwith but with utmost restraint, restore law and order across the country and bring the criminals to justice.

“While still grappling with the havoc of COVID-19, the country can ill afford yet another epidemic that has now appeared in the form of the lawlessness that is going on.

“I thank all Nigerian leaders and other well-meaning Nigerians for their interventions towards restoring peace and order after the unfortunate degeneration of the protest into chaos and brigandage in many parts of the country.

“In particular, I thank all Nigerians for their patience and understanding in this trying moment in our dear country.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has asked those who looted warehouses in the territory to return their loot, directing security agencies in the territory to go after them and ensure their arrest and prosecution.

Warehouses including those privately owned had come under raid in various parts of Abuja since Saturday. On Monday, another warehouse in Gwagwalada where COVID-19 palliatives were stored was looted, with the looters saying it would take them about two days to empty the expansive storage facility.

However, speaking at an emergency security meeting on Monday, Bello who asked those who looted the food items to return them immediately, said there would be the massive deployment of security operatives in and around the factories at the Idu Industrial Layout.

According to him, what was ongoing was no longer #EndSARS protest but broad daylight stealing by hoodlums.

Also, Minister of State in the FCT, Dr Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu condemned the development, saying no nation can survive without food reserves which are now being looted across the country.

Aliyu charged Council chairmen and royal fathers to reach out to opinion leaders to unite the people against looters.

Royal fathers at the meeting called for decisive actions to be taken against those looting across the city. They said hoodlums are beginning to enter markets shops and personal business premises.

;

…Mob storms Idu Industrial layout again

Hoodlums on Monday attacked a warehouse where COVID-19 palliatives are kept at Secretariat road, Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja.

After the hoodlums gained entrance into the warehouse, they looted some COVID-19 palliatives, a resident in the area said.

The warehouse, located near West African Examination Council (WAEC) office, is said to contain items belonging to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

Palliatives carted away included bags of rice and cartons of noodles, cartons of milk and tinned tomatoes, among others.

Some of the items were taken away on motorcycles.

It was learnt that the hoodlums later asked residents in the area to move into the warehouse and pick some palliatives.

According to sources, the items were only brought in on the 12th of October, 2020 by CACOVID but #EndSARS protests were said to have delayed the distribution.

In the same vein, an angry mob has gained entrance into the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Aluminium market located at Idu industrial layout.

The hoodlums took away different furniture materials including doors, window frames, cutting machines, welding machines, chairs, tables other valuables.

...directs security agencies to arrest, prosecute culprits

They said hoodlums are beginning to enter markets shops and personal business premises.

;
