The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has lifted sanctions imposed on Mali.
Mali had been suspended from the regional following the military take over of government in August.
However, wit the annoucement of Mali's 25-member Transition Government on Monday, regional bloc ECOWAS lifted wide-ranging sanctions imposed on the country following the 18th August.

Retired Col Bah Ndaw, 70, is President of the 18-month transition government with military junta leader Col Assimi Goita as vice President and former Foreign Minister Moctar Ouane as Prime Minister.

Military officers occupy four key portfolios for National security, defence, National Reconciliation and Regional Administration in the new government.

In the statement announcing the lifting of sanctions, the Chair of ECOWAS Authority and Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo called on the Mali government to comply with other demands by the regional body, including the dissolution of the ruling military Council and release detainees.

He said the junta has explained in the Transition Charter that the vice president is in charge of defence and security, but would never replace the transition president.

But it remains unclear if the new government enjoys the support of Malians, especially, the opposition coalition M5-RFP, which spareheaded national protests that preceded the military sacking of the government of elected President Ibrahim Keita.

;

The House of Representatives has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) to deliver housing for Nigerians, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has said.

Gbajabiamila said House of Representatives is fully set to partner with the current management of FHA to achieve the mandate of the agency.

The Speaker said with the calibre of the team in the agency, he was of the firm conviction that they would take the agency to enviable heights.

He said this on Tuesday when he hosted the management of FHA, led by the Managing Director, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, who were on a courtesy visit to the National Assembly.
"We're happy that you're here. We look forward to collaborating with you on very pertinent issues. I have no doubt that with the kind of team you have, the FHA is about to witness turnaround for good," he said.

Gbajabiamila added that the current team, whose MD, Senator Ashafa and the Executive Director, Business Development, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin were former members of the National Assembly, has a responsibility, which they must carry out diligently.

"There's no way you'll talk about the development of any country without talking about housing or shelter.

"By God's grace, with you guys on the saddle, Nigeria will witness a lot of roofs on our heads. So, we are very ready to collaborate and partner with you."

Earlier, Senator Ashafa said they visited the Speaker to familiarise themselves and seek for collaboration with the House, having been recently appointed and inaugurated.

He therefore appealed for the amendment of certain aspects of the Act establishing FHA, which he said would make their work more efficient and effective.

"I would want to emphasize the main reason why we are here, which is the collaboration with the National Assembly to achieve our mandate.

"We have found out of recent that some of the items under the Act needed to be worked on. It's on this regard that we came for this visit and crave the indulgence of the House."

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has assured the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT (Lagos State Chapter) of its readiness to assist in capacity building of the teachers.

NiDCOM Boss, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa gave this assurance during a meeting with a delegation of NUT (Lagos State Chapter) in Abuja.

Dabiri-Erewa extolled the virtues of teachers in the society doing great, both within and outside the country as she encouraged them to give out their best while assuring “There is always a reward for hardwork”.

Citing example of a lecturer in Lagos state, who has spent 35 years teaching in South Africa, the NiDCOM boss said there are plans to work with their likes and even those in the Diaspora to train the teachers on capacity building.

She said “I will like to commend you teachers and assure you that NiDCOM is ready to work with you, because without teachers, the society can not be a good foundation ”.

She said actions should be taken on behalf of Nigerian students who go through a lot when they travel out for study and those who spend years and come back with non-standard and unaccredited certificates.

Earlier, Mr. Adesegun Raheem, who spoke on behalf of the delegation, appreciated Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa by extolling her virtues and contribution to Education sector.

The session was very rowdy when the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila read their separate letters of defection.

The two lawmakers are, Ephraim Nwuzi (Etched/Omuma Federal Constituency of Rivers) and David Abel (Gashaka/Kurmi/Sardauna Federal Constituency of Taraba).

While Nwuzi was present at plenary and officially received into the APC by House Leader, Ado Doguwa, Abel was absent and his defection, the Speaker ruled should be taken on the next legislative day.

The decamping did not go down well with members of opposition leaders who objected to the continued stay of the members in the House and asked the Speaker to declare their seats vacant.

Leading the objection, Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, raised a constitutional order saying such defection can only be allowed if there was crisis in the party.

He said: “The member whose letter has just be read is from Rivers State and I am aware that there is no crisis in the PDP in Rivers State. As a result of that, we are demanding that the seat be declared vacant”.

Deputy Minority Leader, Tobi Okechukwu said: “This country is based on law and due process. It is clear that our colleagues who wrote to defect are simply quoting the charisma of the Speaker.

“The law says there must be a crack in the party on whose platform the member was elected and in the absence of that, such a member should lose his seat. The Speaker must obey the constitution and ask those defecting to vacate their seat”.

Leader of the PDP caucus in the House, Kingsley Chinda, said the law was very explicit on defection of members, adding that the Speaker swore to uphold the constitution and the law.

He informed the Speaker he was on trial, stressing his decision on the issue would go a long way to save democracy, insisting however that there are several decisions of the court on the issue of defection.

He said in one of its decisions, the Supreme Court held that a lawmaker who defected to another political party other than the one on whose platform he was elected shall have his seat declared vacant and that the Speaker has the responsibility of upholding the rule.

Chinda said the Speaker has yet another opportunity to uphold the rule of law saying “if you fail to uphold the law, it is either an act of cowardice or a deleberate refusal to uphold the law.”

Gbajabiamila responded: “When I was Minority Leader, I said exactly the things you are saying now when we lose members to your party and you shouted me down.

“You must look at tbe combined reading of section 60 of the constitution and our House rules. It is in the rules of the House that people can cross and you sanctioned it. You have said I should do the right thing which I will do.”

Referring to provisions of section 68 of the Constitution when a member’s seat can be declared vacant, he said: “You are aware of a particular member of your party that has not been present on the floor of this House since we started seating.
